Easy there folks. I had always been taught in school when outlining your paper IV was correct. I did not know about the 'clock thing.' Great day, I feel like some of you would punch me if you could for bringing that up.

Sue, thanks for giving an alternative. But knowing the history of clock faces I now do prefer IIII.

Take a good look at the numerals from 1 to 12.
I
II
III
IIII or IV
VI
VII
VIII
IX
X
XI
XII

Notice that subtraction is used only on IX and IV, if it is used instead of IIII. Also a good reason to leave IV out is to keep the fourth hour different from VI. Its different than the IX / XI issue because the fourth and sixth hours are essentially upside down. (Maybe harder to read.)

Bruce,
Not ANY or ALWAYS, I grew up with a roman numeral clock being the focal point of one of the main rooms in our house and it had an IV on it not IIII.
I guess there's always that exception.

I like the clock 'as is' and will enjoy making it for my niece's birthday gift.

Sue... As always, I like it just the way it is too. I made a similar clock a few years ago (bandsaw years - before scrollsaw) from a picture I saw in one of my Country Sampler mags. I actually made the numbers as a seperate layer out of different wood to make them stand out. It didn't have the nice detail you have between the two outter rings either. Super...
To answer one of your questions from an earlier post... I gave up cutting my 'cars' from wood to design patterns for a buddy with a plasma cutting table that was a pretty well known drag racer (around here in the Land of NED) from the 60's....

Question

Hey guys and girls - I haven't seen anyone post a finished picture of the clock?

Sue, I have the clock face cut but am working on the backer for it. I am making a diamond shape backer and looking for a nasturtium flower to scroll into the bottom portion. It will be a gift for my parent's 40'th anniversary. The nasturtium is the flower symbol of celebrating 40 years (from what the internet tells me). I will definitely post a picture when finished.

Soemone mentioned MDF. Hurray! I usee it a lot, well for most things I am going to paint. It has a good finish, takes little preparation and keeps its shape. I ise an airbrush and there is no sanding necessary between coats. I use MDF for most of my portrait cut backings and for painted segmentations. Its added advantage is cost, for segmentation, I usually cut all the varying thicknesses together and can afford to waste the un-necessary bits.

Of course, there are projects where only wood will do. I use mostly English hardwoods (I have a tame bespoke joiner locally and a tree surgeon). When using wood, I finish in tung or danish oil, or occasionally spray with matt varnish.
