Default Set It Straight (corrections from Issue 27)

Here are the two corrections that also appear in the Letters section (Set It Straight) of SSW&C 28.

The Lang Clock
The patterns for the Lang Clock, which appeared in Summer 2007, Issue 27, were incorrect. Photocopy the patterns at 99% in order to get the correct size. Corrected patterns have also been posted below

Dragon Chest
There were two errors with the Dragon Chest. In the narrative and the Materials list, the notation to cut the short side panel border pieces from 2"-wide stock was incorrect. Cut these two pieces from 21/4"-wide stock, as shown on the pattern on the pullout. The long side panel border pattern on the pullout was also incorrect. The pattern should be 2"-wide. Center the pattern on the 2"-wide stock or trim 1⁄16" off both sides of the pattern. A corrected pattern is available below.

Bob, lately, actually, the last half dozen times or more I've clicked on to the forum, I've had to log in with my user name and password. That has never been a problem before. I've never had to do this. Why am I now having to log on each time I click on to the forum. David (guitarman)

Question Dragon Box questions

I'm having some trouble with the dragon box dimensions and I'm hoping you can answer some questions. If there is a better place to ask these, please let me know. My sanity may be at stake here.

#1 In the corrections, you refer to the "short side panel border pieces" and the "long side panel border pattern". Just for clarification, does this refer to the fretwork or does it also apply to the frame pieces? I'm hoping that I won't have to recut the frame to 2 1/4".

#2 Speaking of the frame, I had trouble figuring out the dimensions. The only one I found was the 3 each of 8' poplar. I used the fretwork frame dimensions in the materials list to determine the frame size. I used 20"x11"x10" with 11" being the width (front to back). The rabbit is 1/2" and the frame pieces are 2" total width. This makes the interior measurements of the front/back of the box frame including the depth of the rabbit 17" x 7". The side interior measurements are 7" x 8". However, measurements given in the materials list for the poplar inside panels are 16" x 6" and 6" x 7" respectively. I'm missing something here.

#3, related to #2. I just assumed that the above was a mistake in the materials list until I tried to fit in the side panel inserts. They measure 5 1/4" x 7 1/4" each. This doesn't fit my measurements of 6" x 16"" for the outside interior meaurement of the front. There is an extra 3/4" at the top which I don't think was intended even allowing for the finishing strips..... Or maybe this would work if the strips are 3/8". I bet that's it. Still leaves #2 though.

Sorry this is so long. I've struggled with this problem for quite some time before coming here. I know I could just wing it but as a beginner woodworker, I'd like to learn to follow directions first. Any light you can shine on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Richard A.

In addition to what was noticed on the Lang Clock patterns. When you photocopy your patterns, check to make sure that ALL your copies for Parts A,B,K,N, and NA are 10 inches wide. Every copier has a mind of its own, and that is causing some issues for folks. In addition to the errors already noted, the size for Part N should be 12 1/2 inches long, like on the materials list, NOT the same size as part K as noted on the pattern pull-out.Add 1/2 inch to the top end of the pattern for Part K to correct this error. I am sorry for any expense and headaches this may have caused anyone. Dale
