Carl, let Rick do it, I think this has been fun.

[quote=CanadianScroller]Since the puzzle is on Rick's site, I think he should have the honour if he likes.
I have messaged him with the solution which was found on a magic site.

This was just one solution and I guess he would have to investigate it.

Do you remember when you were a child and you saw a rainbow?
The amazing beauty and mystery.
Now that you know the way rainbows are made some of that sparkle fades away.
I think this is the main reason magicians keep their magic and illusions a secret.

Now, the truth about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy messes you up for life!

I have found out how to get the pencil in, but not how to drill the holes.

I am guessing the trick is to use heat/hot water, long drill bit, clamp with a lot of pressure!?

Larger and more detailed pictures are now on my web site. Hope this clears up any thinking I wasn't showing everything about it.

Thanks Rick for the clearer pictures, but it still doesn't clear anything up for me. I am still puzzled.

Is the pencil floating? ie- can it turn around or is it fixed?

I think the pencil was cut into pieces and reassembled one piece at a time back to itself inside the holes.
