Earring holders

Got an order for 4 "earring holders" from a lady who visited my craft mall booth. We met, she described what she wanted, I searched the net and we settled on a simple design.

The Craft Mall owner is VERY pleased with them, I hope the orderer is....and will find out tomorrow.

Made out of 3/4 white oak, routed top, scrolled slats (and yes, I used SPIRALS!!!! chasing a flat blade cut), finished with 3 coats of Minwax wipe on poly. Size is about 12" high, 11" wide.....

I like it Barry, nice, simple and very clean lines. My type of project, although when I try to rout a top like that I get a tremendous amount of burning. Hubby says I run the router too fast. I have only one question, well maybe two!
1) Will it hang on the wall or sit on a dresser?
2) Did the lady order them for personal use or to use as display units, perhaps in her jewellry store?

Running the router fast doesn't cause burning. Moving the wood across it too slowly does. Routers spin at a very high rate and you can move the wood across very quickly.

The earring holder is very nice and I'm sure your customer will love it. She must really have a lot of earrings!

Thanks and I left out some details.

It has keyhole slots cut in the back, so it is a hanger - although a stand would be simple to incorporate. If a stand was incorporated, the pegs for necklaces/bracelets would not be needed....or could be moved to the side. She plans to give them as gifts.

I cut the slots with my hand fretsaw.....that is why they are not "perfectly straight" up and down ......and it would be simple to route a grove in back, and use the whole thing as a "frame" for a nicely scrolled fretwork piece (which is the next step,,,,once I get a working saw).

And I take light passes on the router table. I think I took 3 per side.....

Kathy, maybe you should start routing. I never have either except for a couple keyhole slots with a very old Skil fixed base router. Amazon.com has a good sale going on now on their routers and many other power tools. I just ordered a Black & Decker 2 hp plunge VS router for $64.07 including shipping. The other best price I found for this one was $89. I'm sure it won't be a work horse, but for the little bit of lightweight work I'll be doing with it, I'm sure it will be adequate. They don't have this one in stock right now but will be shipping them out within a month or so. For that price, I can wait. They also have a 1 3/4 HP one in stock for $7 more, but it's also worth $20 less so the smart thing to do is wait for the better one. I'll just have another tool to learn how to use.

BTW, it's nice to finally see what you look like. Or did you scan that picture from some glamour magazine?

That's very nice BF - and the routing looks better than mine usually does - I end up with little bumps on the curves that I have to try and sand off ...

.. and yes Mike it's nice to see a pic of Dusty - but isn't she called Kelly, not Kathy?
