Default Yahoo search

been searching around on the internet for used tools, nothing new about that. I'm searching for a lathe, and was thinking about the possibility of finding a used one that might have a bunch of accessories with it at a cheap price.
So I type in on yahoo "woodworking michigan message board"
the number 2 result was a thread from this message board with a post from me. now that was freaky.
I just typed that in, because part of my search was me thinking that any local clubs or message boards may have a "for sale" section. I've pretty much exhausted all the local classified ads.

Jeff,

I have been looking at used lathes for a few years. You can use Ebay with a searching distance of a limited number of miles from your zip code. They do occasionally show up around me. Just have not found the rightdeal yet.

yes, i check those two sites out regularly, thanx guys.

I find ebay to be the worst place to buy a tool. The prices are rarely cheaper than in a store, most of the sellers are selling new equipment and then they overcharge shipping. There are a few people with used stuff, but then half of them want you to p/u the stuff, and when I narrow a search to my area, I get almost no results. I am in michigan...might as well be alaska.
and then there's the auction nuts...not just ebay, but regular auctions. I was at an auction in lansing a few months ago where a guy spent $8 for clamps that I could buy at home depot for $10. those clamps where almost rusted in half. or how about them rusty old hand planes for $50 that aren't worth $2 ! what a crazy world.

I don't know about where everyone else lives, but I've notice that people here must leave their tools out in the front yards, they are so nasty looking.

I have bought a few things on Ebay. I did get my RBI Hawk from Ebay and I am satisfied with it. I know that Ebay can be a crap shoot, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

For a lathe, I have a Shopsmith that I bought about 30 years ago. It's not bad but not as good as a stand-alone tool. About the only thing is use it for now is as a drill press and a horizontal boring machine. Occasionally I will turn somethings on it, but not very much.

One time I bought a hand plane from a flee market for $7. It had a crack in the side but it was a Craftsman, so I took it to Sears and they gave me a brand new one. Some tools with the lifetime warranties work out pretty good.

I'm sure you are already "on it", but if not....look for school and government auctions as well. Nothing like finding a 1940's Oliver lathe in need of a little TLC for $100! I know a few guys in WI who've picked up some good old arn and refurbished it. That old arn will last forever!

Jeff, I will keep you in mind. I have been considering selling one of my lathes because my tool collection is bigger then my shopspace. I havent turned a lot in the last couple years, so one will probably be sufficient. I will keep you posted. Dale

what's the lathe and what would it cost? I'm not looking to spend more than a few hundred and I'm looking to buy real soon. I may buy a new mini lathe and starter kit today from penn state.
