Default Caribou

Was driving to town this morning and saw a small herd of about 40 caribou just about a mile from home. So I went back and got my camera to take pictures. By time I got back they were not close to the road any more and part of the herd were way off in the distance . I did the best I could to capture some pictures of them.

Bob,

Nice pictures, however those are Elk and not Caribou...

The only thing better than a picture is having them in the freezer.

Yep, definitely elk. Yep, definitely Bill.

Great shots. Now go out and invest in a telescopic lens so you can show us the smile on their faces.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Thanks for sharing.

I actually can say I've seen a small herd, about 6 once, in the mountains of Arizona. Just happened to be at a state park and they appeared up on a hill. They were only about 50 yards away, if that far. They were some big beasts. Too cool.

Any time I have a wild animal sighting I'm thrilled. I don't care if it's just a possum or squirrel. Now, if I could just find me one of them armadillos I'd be happy. But I'm guessing they've gone into hibernation. They're about the only thing I haven't seen around here yet . . . unless you count the dead ones on the side of the road.

Well, what do I know. The old timers that have lived here all their lives say they are caribou and they come to that same location in the flats every year about this time and wait until another herd catches up with them and once they meet up as a group of 80 to 100 they all leave for wherever they are going to.
We also have a lot of elk around here and they are WAY bigger than the ones shown here. We generally only see one or two elk at a time. Usually when we don't want to when they jump out on the highway right in front of the car..

Here is some information on caribou from a pamphlet on this area that shows pictures and expalins about this phenomenon of caribou herds coming through this area this time of year..

It states the first tine on one of the antlers is palmated and extends over the face to form what is called a shovel or a plough..

A close look shows that part that extends out over the face on the ones here that have antlers..
But I will investigate further so I can be sure one way or the other if they are elk or caribou.
