Default Jokes on the message board

I offer my sincere apologies about the joke thread that has gone too far. I should have stepped in immediately.

I admit, I'm a sucker for jokes, probably because I can't tell one to save my life. This is a woodworking message board with visitors of both genders and from many walks of life. So, because of that, I think it may be time to take a haitus from jokes for a while. If you've got a good one, PM it to your friends, but...I'm going to have to ask you to keep them off the forum.

The written word is really only half of a conversation. Humans are conditioned to look at body language during a converstaion, and despite the usefullness of Emoticolons, we miss that part of the conversation here on the message board. It's even worse than talking to someone on the phone because we can't even judge their emotions by their tone of voice.

I apologize that this got out of control. In no way do I condone any sort of stereotypes of chauvanistic behaviors. And I offer heartfelt apologies to anyone who was offended by the jokes--regardless of their intended meaning or message. Tony Robbin, a well-known self-enrichment guru often says that "It isn't what we say, but what the other person thinks we said. And it's our job to make sure that person understands what we meant."

I agree with Bob and Evie on the joke telling needs to be stopped-- but please -please DO NOT send them to my box. If I want to hear a joke I will watch the comedy channel on tv. I do get offensive jokes sent to me sometimes and I would appreciate those to stop also. I DO NOT find off color jokes funny. I don't want to put blocks on my p ms but if I have to I will just leave the forum. I love this little family of mine but it has gone to pot in the last few months and it isn't about scrolling but it is more of a bad mannered not funny joke fest. Need I say more? --nuff said. These are not funny when you malisiously hurt people or bring up old woinds.. pain is pain rather it be to the heart or to the mind or body-- lets not poke fun of anyone but only to ourselves
Nuff said

I'm just afraid that "Clean Jokes" are subjective...what is clean to me may not be clean to someone else...

Let's take a hiatus for a bit, and maybe we can can all come up with some criteria.

It's too bad that it had to come down to this, but you can't make everybody happy all the time.
Nobody can force anybody to read a joke here and there's a little button on the top of the screen that says "Back" that will instantly take you off the offending page.
I've always taken the stance that if you can't laugh at yourself, don't laugh at others. If somebody makes a joke about me or my ethnic, or religious background, or the fact that I am a middle age male, I take it for what it is...a joke. If I can't come up with a good come-back, I'll move on. Why argue about it? I have even ignored direct personal attacks on some boards instead of lowering myself to the attacker's level. (Never argue with a fool, people might not be able to tell who's who!)
As far as confusing newcomers about the true purpose of this forum, the jokes were placed in the "Off Topic" section. To me, off topic means anything but woodworking.
Don't get me wrong, I strongly believe that profanity or direct personal attacks should not be allowed on this board. Jokes should be taken for what they are, jokes.
Since most of us are really just visitors here, (even though we are like a family), we'll have to abide by Bob's rules or go elsewhere.
That's my $0.02!

Default Off Topics

I agree with Woodbutcher68 (Bob). Perhaps someone can explain what Off Topics means? I go to this board to see what is there that is not particularly related to scroll saws, woodworking etc. That, to me, is off topics. Nobody is forcing any one to read the jokes. If you don't want to read them, simply scroll past them or go to another board!

To Buzz and Woodbutcher,
I would like to say that just because it is the "Off Topic" board does not give you or anyone else the right to be racist, chauvinistic or demeaning in any way. We, us females, should be able to read all posts and not be made to feel demeaned.

Hi Marsha

I know you feel strongly about this subject and understandably so, but I'm going to edit your post to make it less of a personal attack on some of the other contributors to this thread. They also have feelings which should be respected. If people have concerns about the direction the forum is taking, it's better that they should feel free to express them here rather than simply move to another forum.

In more general terms, I don't see why we can't enjoy a bit of good natured banter. However, we need to bear in mind that this forum has a large membership from diverse backgrounds. It's easy to inadvertantly offend others so we need to be mindful of this when we post. It's not a matter of being 'politically correct', it's a matter of having consideration for people whose values might be at odds with ours. I believe very firmly that as scrollers we have an awful lot in common and we can enjoy a shared community when we explore that common theme. It's when we branch into other aspects of life that our divisions become more apparent and our community becomes fragile. After the recent ruckus, Bob is right to ask that we should focus more on those traits which bring us together and set aside those which might divide us.

Hmmm, apparently we aren't allowed to express our opinions without being attacked. Too bad I missed the original post from Marsha before it was edited, I'm sure I could have written a proper reply.
As I said before, you can't make everybody happy all the time.
Life's too short to be mad all the time.
