Default Scroller help wanted for charity project

Hi All,

Ms. Barbara Hensley operates Hope Chest for Breast Cancer in the Twin Cities area (MN). Ms. Hensley is interested in having some Christmas ornaments cut for a fundraiser in November, and for sale in their Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Retail Store.

The patterns were created by Tom Zeig and were first published in SSW Holiday 2005 issue. Tom has granted permission for us to post those patterns for anyone willing to cut and paint some ornaments for this worthwhile cause. The only painting is the ribbon in the Dove's mouth - which should be pink for Breast Cancer. The patterns can be obtained by clicking on this sentence. You will need the Adobe Acrobat reader to open the file.

If you have any questions about the project, you may contact Ms. Hensley:

Phone - 952-471-8700
Email - bhensley@hopechest.us

Finished product can be sent to:

Barbara Hensley
Hope Chest for Breast Cancer
3850 Shoreline Drive South
Wayzata, MN 55391

Thank you to anyone who wishes to participate in this endeavor.

Last year I cut out some of those ornaments and gave a few away to some cancer survivors I know. I also sold a few and donated the proceeds to a local breast cancer fund. One of our woodworking club members was the only male breast cancer survivor in their fund raising calendar an couple of years ago.
I'll see if I have some I can send her.

Question

I am interested in doing this but I have a couple of rookie questions :
What wood thickness is considered standard for ornaments ?
Should the rest of the ornament be stained or just left natural and sealed ?

Thanx

I have twelve of each already cut and ready for mailing to her. I did them right after I heard about it last week.

I don't think there is a standard wood thickness. Most of them are 1/4" or less just to have less weight on tree branches. I am going to cut mine out of plywood just because I think the design is delicate enough to not work out real well with hardwood. You can stain the rest of the wood as you see fit, or leave it natural. I would at least seal it and get as nice a finish as I can on it (just cause I am trying to get into the habit of not calling it finished until I get that step done....training...training...training)

So, really whatever you think looks good will probably work fine. I've had a couple of people who are sending a few to this lady and contacting their local breast cancer hospital and donating a few more locally too. Whatever you want to do is fine.

The original article listed different colors for different kinds of cancer. So there is a lot of opportunity to branch out with this if you want.

Whatever you do will be much appreciated. I'm so glad that so many are willing to help. Makes my heart feel all warm and fuzzy! Yours should feel that way too!

I made mine out of 1/8 Baltic birch. I make most of my ornaments out of 1/8 wood and occasionally use 1/4.
I just packed up 15 to send to Minnesota.

Pat;
I agree . . . it is not finished until it is finished .

This is a picture update of the 24 that I made.
The first pictures that I originally posted on the other two sites only had a coat of Danish oil on them . I let the Danish oil cure for a couple days. They are now all finished and although the shine does not show in the picture, they all have two coats of gloss lacquer on them and are now ready for mailing.
They are fun and easy to make and are nice little contribution to the cancer society.
