Default An attaboy for Rick!

I read about the beginners kit Rick is going to have on his site...a knife, glove, thumb guard, chisel set, strop, instructions.....for 34.95!! That is a great deal for a new carver...sure wish I would have found something like that when I started!! That page is also a really good referral for all the new carvers wanting to know what to get....thanks Rick! I was also looking at the great book selection Rick has on little shavers....the problem is! : I want 'em all LOL....too bad we can't work up some kind of swap club , loan club, exchange club whatever you want to call it! Like lots of you, there are no carving clubs anywhere near where I am, so no club library to use! :-[ Most of you may carve one thing and its not a problem, but a jack of all trades like me that likes to try everything and is a master of none of it.......geez...those books can get expensive and really cut into the tool budget ha ha.....just a thought, I do have those once in awhile :P I am rambling, guess I will go take my pills LOL :-X

Hi-Ho
If there are some specific books you are wanting to read, post it. I would be willing to loan you anything I have. On the other hand we could start a seperate post on carving books and we could list the ones we have available for loan/trade. I have about 30 different books currently. I also agree about Rick's site. This will be an easy reference for the new carvers that join us here.

That's not a bad idea Ric. Personally, I'd like to see one list, it would be easier to view rather than each of us putting up a posting with the ones we have. Maybe something where you can enter a title if it isn't already entered, and put your name beside it. If the title is already present, add your name to the list of names beside it.

How about it BobD? Any chance of getting something like that on the new site?

I just ordered the Beginners Kit from Rick. You just can't beat the price for all you get.

We also discussed my type of carvings & he made a couple of additional recommendations, which I took him up on.

Thanks Rick. I look forward to receiving my new tools!

I just ordered my beginner's kit from Rick yesterday, but I'm so anxious to get started that I went out and bought a bench knife just so I could start whittling some. I can't wait to get all my new tools. Thanks goes to Rick for putting together something that is so affordable!!

I've thought about having a FAQ on the new site, but from talking to people, it's almost an ice breaker for a new person to get on the board and introduce themselves. I read somewhere once that if you ask a favor, you make a friend, and asking about what a beginner needs really generates dialogue...
That said, I think it's great the Rick put together the kit. He certinly knows his stuff when it comes to knives and sharpening (and carving)
