As far as I know. People do tend to use sconces as decoration rather than burning candles in them. It also depends on the type of scronce it is. A scrolled sconce, i imagine, would just be for decoration. Hope this helps.

The sconces I make use tea lights. They have been perfectly safe.
Tea lights come with there own little cup to retain the melted wax till it is all bured up.
You can get a candle cup for regular taper candles. Some have a little brass ferrule on the end.
The most important thing to remember is never leave the candle unattended.

The reason I'm asking is I am making a pair of sconces, and am considering acrylic mirror as part of the medium in making them. The candle would be approximatly 4 inches away from the acrylic, and before i go into production mode on this, I was wondering if my idea is stupid, and I should just opt for wood in its place. Glass mirror is not an option because of color, I want a colored mirror. Thanks, dale

Most of the heat from a candle will rise.
I don't think you would have too much problem with acrylic 4" away from the flame.

Maybe you could just run a test with the acrylic for several hours before you make the sconces.
