Default Not scrolling, but what I have been working on

Here is what I have been doing the past few days. Our daughter came for a visit and brought 6 baby chicks that she knew Mom wanted....so a house had to be built. Ended up being 4'X8'X6' tall and the run is 8'wide X 16' long 5' tall. I dug a trench under around the side to bury the wire in cement...hope to keep the critters out.

Box's for 7 layers and space for 7 more if wanted. The tank in the back ground is our Catchment tank where water is either delivered and stored or rain water from the roof. It is them pumped to the house through filters...like a well.

Yes that is all lava around with red and dark cinder on top. We also put up a dog fence to keep them apart from the coop and run.

Hi Larry nice job on the hen house.

What sort of critters do you have there? We lost 3 of the girls to mink last month.

To be honest, I do not know the breed of chickens we have. Our daughter and son-in-law came for a visit and brought the chicks with them...well, they bought them from someone here on the Island that raises them. She told me they were Easter chicks, because they lay colored eggs. But I'm not sure what that breed is. The are about 8 weeks old.

Sorry you lost your girls. We have a critter here called a mongoose. Brought here many years ago to kill the rats, except they sleep at night and run during the day when the rats sleep...but we have allot of them. We are trying to make sure they stay out of the hen house and run.

Well all the best with them Larry, you can't beat a fresh laid egg. Though if you boil them they say, they're better 2-3 days old when the shells are less porous.

Good Luck

That's way cool. We had chickens when I was a kid. There is all kinds of good things associated with 'grow your own.' Well done. And kudos to the kids for bringing them up to you.

Looks like you did a great job on your chick's house & pen, Larry. We had chickens when we were growing up. Dad always wanted to have the fresh eggs & we even grew corn to make feed for them. Good luck with the layers & hope you have a bunch. Take Care
