My husband and I made a couple for the grandchildren a couple of years ago. We didn't have a pattern. I took a piece of 3/4 poplar and scrolled the name out, sanded the letters so they went in and out easily and painted them primary colors, then put a 1/4 inch backer on the piece. My husband made a slanted box to mount the name piece on. It was very sturdy and he made a back that swung down to become a step. It was a neat thing and they still use them.

The box fit the size of the name top and got wider as it went to the floor. Does that help?
