Sad sign of the times. Have also heard of instances where store clerks set up handheld devices to capture information within the stores when making purchases. Very sad, it's no wonder everyone is stressed more than ever trying to stay vigilant for everything.

John B: Thanks for the skimming information. Looks like the presentation was intended for bank staff but I am very glad to have had the opportunity to have read it. I only use the ATM machines when I am on vacation and then try to use one inside a bank. My wife uses ours at our local branch. Glad to have the info. Thanks. Woodie |

John that picture is of a Bank of New Zealand ATM and the green shield is a plastic gadget that is used to prevent skimming. Apparantly skimmers put a reading device on the ATM in such a way that the information can be read by them whereas the green plastic screen prevents the viewing of the underside of the card. Rhys |

Sometimes co-incidence is a strange thing. When my wife got home yesterday, after I'd posted this info, she received a phone call from her bank asking if she'd bought, a heap of stuff from the US on her credit card. (I thought I'd been busted getting all those new machines LOL) Somehow, someone had gotten her card details and ran up about $1200, in 1/2 doz transactions. Thankfully the bank was onto it and had not approved any payments. She just has to wait for a new card to arrive now.

John: Thanks so much for the information on this it really hits home with me as my pension check is directly deposited in my bank in the U.S. because they will not direct deposit it out of country and here in Mexico I can not use my card any where except for the ATMs because my bank will not except it unless I am able to punch in my pin because they say that here in Mexico there is too much credit card scamming going on {my answer to them on that was well if fraud was there concern then they better do the same in the U.S.} Anyway none of the stores or even inside the banks has those little machines that you can punch in your pin on so the only way for me to excess my money is through the ATMs so I will be ever more aware of the machines I use THANKS AGAIN!!!!! Erssel P.S. One more thing is by Mexico law you can only draw 5000 pesos {depending on the exchange rate is some wher between $200 and $300 or so U.S. dollars} out a day from the ATMs and they are all connected in some way because you can't draw out of one and go to another bank and draw out of it on the same day so it takes me 2 days just to get the money to pay my rent which is 7000 pesos Erssel Last edited by Burdez; 11-04-2009 at 03:45 AM. John . Do you know if these devices are just placed there or are they securely attached . Perhaps one should carry a screw driver or pocket knife and see if these plates can be pryed off before inserting the card . Cheers . Roger |

G'day Roger, They are usually just placed in position using double sided tape etc and the norm seems to be to only leave them for an hour of two before retrieving them along with the info they have recorded.
