Default New computer

My laptop died a quick death!! #1 geek son came over for the week end to help get a new one. . the old one (HP) had a extimate pf $400 to repair. Went to Best found a Dell with Windows 7 installed for $490. Seemed like a easy decision to me, , so we got the new one and geek boy spent the rest of the day installing the stuff I "need"!! It seems, so far, pretty easy to deal with. . A lot cleaner display than the Vista for sure. Now i have to break out the backed up data and get in installed

Boy, I read your post, Grover, and it seemed like almost an exact duplicate of my scenario earlier this year. My HP fried as well, and I ended up buying a nice laptop which cost about the same as a repair would have. Only I bought a Gateway instead of a Dell.

Hope it goes well for you! I love my laptop and don't see a reason to ever go back to a desktop.

Good luck with Windows 7. I've had it for about 2 weeks and I hate it. Thinking of putting back XP

They just launched Windows 7 here last week. Did Canada get an early launch??
My son can get a Windows 7 upgrade through his college for about $30. Wondering whether it would be worth upgrading from Vista.

Windows 7 oficially came out on the 22nd, so 2 days ago. A gift from someone in the field. Don't ask.

Any new operating system is a chore to learn Diane. Hang in there, it will get easier and easier as you get acquainted with it. Personally I almost always wait a year or so for the OS to be out in the real world. This gives Microsoft time to fix the bugs.

The getting acquainted with is not bad it's the missing parts that bug me. I try and install programs and it keeps telling me that this is missing and then that is missing. I've been told that they cut things out of it. And, I guess I'm finding out which things they are. That's the frustrating part.

Hi Diane - no comment on the launch date - only to say that I looked at this new OS a couple of weeks back. After the disaster of Vista I'm more than a little cautious with Windows 7 but at least can run your favourite software in Windows XP mode which seems to resolve most of the issues for the moment. My biggest gripe is the lack of drivers but i guess that will gradually improve. For now though i'm back using XP Sp3 and until I upgrade my laptop/desktop replacement i think I'll be sticking with it. Better the devil you know!

My first computer was a Gateway, and that was about 12 years ago. It's still running well and my kids use it for their games and school stuff.

So, at least for me, Gateway has been pretty reliable.
