Well Shawn... Maybe the power supply was going bad all along and when it did it took the hard drive with it? I wish you were closer... I'd love to look at your computer. Let us know how you make out with the trashed machine. Inquiring minds want to know!

Yeah, I wish you lived closer, too, Rick! ![]() Anyways, I'm up and running again. I bought a new Gateway laptop at Best Buy today. It's a dual processor, 2.2 GHz, 4GB RAM, 360 GB HDD. The price seemed right at $479. Now I just have to get used to this smaller 15.6 inch screen and this $%&*@ touchpad (my external mouse has a PS/2 connection and the laptop only takes USB's. I'll have to pick up a new mouse (maybe wireless) as soon as I can. I think I'll set it up so that I can use my old 20" monitor when I'm not on the go. Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll let you know what happens with my old one. A guy at a local store said he'll check out the hard drive for me. |

| 'Senior' member - no way! | Hi Shawn - congrats on the new purchase Ref your mouse - wireless is the way to go, much more convenient so long as you always have spare batteries handy. I use rechargeable ones and with constant use they last be around 3 - 4 weeks before they need replacing. However, if you like your old mouse you can pick up a PS2 to USB converter from most decent computer shops Setting up your 20" monitor is a good idea, in fact if you extend your laptop screen onto it you'll have a much bigger desktop. I occasionally do translation work and its real handy to have the original doc on one screen and the one I'm working on on the other. A couple more comments, laptops can warm up if left on for long periods of time - mine is on 24/7 - so to help prevent overheating I have mine raised up an inch on wooden spacers so air can flow underneath. A purchase I'd also recommend if you are going to use your laptop a lot as a desktop is a comfortable external keyboard. Finally think serious about switching to a wireless modem so you are not connecting your internet line into the lap - this is definitely my number one recommendation! PS . and dont forget to back up your data regularly, eh! Good luck!
