Default U.S. puzzle

I completed this yesterday. It is for my granddaughters 6th birthday at the end of February. She complained that the previous oneI made her had pieces that were too loose so I cut this one with a #2/0 puzzle blade. It is 24" wide and 16" high cut from 1/4 birch ply with the same for the backer. Sprayed with dewaxed shellac first, then painted with acrylic craft paint. I used 3/16 high rub-on letters applied to the puzzle for the names. The letters stick better if the wood is partially finished. Three final spray coats of dewaxed shellac keep the letters from rubbing off. The original pattern is in Patrick Spielman's book Scroll Saw Puzzle Patterns and has been enlarged so that Alaska is correctly proportioned compared to Texas and all the other still have their correct proportions and shapes to each other.

As usual, all comments and criticisms are gratefully appreciated.

George

This looks great George.
Why in the off-topic section though?

What does dewaxed shellac do?

What, no State Capitols...lol, just kidding there. Fantastic job on the puzzle. It's a sneaky way to make learning fun. They learn something without knowing it. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. Red,, it's in the off topic area because I goofed this morning. The dewaxed shellac is a sealer that allows you to put any other finish over it or under it.
Now, how do I move the thread to Bragging section? I did it by copying the text and pasting it into a new thread then reuploading the picture. Is there an easier way?

George,
nice job on the puzzle, and thanks for the tip on the shellac.

I like that a lot!

I assume the sizes of the states are correctly relative to each other. It's the first time I've really seen how big Alaska is!

Have phun..... Carter

Very cool! My neices will need one of those in a few years (but with Canada)

Carter, the sizes look right (George said he resized it for accuracy). Alaska is a rather large state. Alaskans tease Texans by threatening to split Alaska in two, making Texas the third largest state....

The University of Alaska at Fairbanks has a good site for comparing Alaska with other states here:
The Last Frontier
