Maybe he was hanging out in Detroit with Kwame Kilpatrick. He has lots of spare time on his hands now.

Why didn' t the organizers of the show go and get the mayor to judge? So, was it a selling art show where you sold your items? or just a display/gallery type one? And what did you have there? |

It was a selling art show, not a competition, but there was supposedly a "coveted Majors award" for something, don't know what..perhaps best booth, or a particular item in a booth he liked the best. Most dissorganized show I ever saw. It was my first show selling pens, and it was interesting. The organizers where the chamber of commerce, and none of them had a clue what the other was doing...thus they didn't even know the Mayor wasn't there. We were all gone, and nobody had the award, so my wife called and they had no idea..took them a few hours more to call her back and let her know that the mayor forgot and stayed home or something. Somehow I made a bit of cash, but not alot. They had music playing, live music and it was so loud you could only hear questions in between the music. Had a few intarsia's on display too. Really appreciated the guy that came up and wanted to know, and I quote " Who the @#@$ would pay $300 for that @#$@# ? Love all the kids with the dripping candy apples that have to touch every pen too, sometimes dropping them to the asphalt. Really made me want to quit my day job and do craft and art shows for a living...NOT !!!

Hi Jeff, Your reasons are why I no longer do craft shows. I would much rather give my work to family members and friends. Sorry to hear that you didn't do well either money wise or award wise. As I said family and friends usually appreciate your work. Keep your spirits up. Hal - Woodenfish |

Jeff, Sorry for the disappointing show/sale, Personally, I haven't done one yet, and don't know that I will. I have heard so many horror stories like yours from so many people. I had a friend here that does VERY NICE bottle stoppers. He spend hours making a display that showed off his work. He even went to the trouble to cut wine bottle tops off to make a very unique display, with a sign stating what they were and how to use them properly (I know, it should be a no brain er, 1, buy wine, 2. remove cork, 3. push stopper into wine bottle) He had several people come up to him after looking at his display for several minutes and ask the question...WHAT ARE THOSE FOR??? Believe it or not. I can't deal with people like that, sorry...

I have to agree with what hss been said so far. I have had sales efforts go so bad you have to take a real strong drink and laugh. That said when I add up my sales it also shows the other side of the coin. I have never done real well at this racket and up till recently was treating it as hobby. I was a level 2 Foster Home looking after Fetal Alcahol teens. My shop was my stress buster. But I have made enough to pay for my tools. which might not sound like much so I will list them.hehehe. Delta 9 and 14 and a Pioneer18" Bandsaw. Porter Cable dual base router. Ryobi 3hp plunge router. Ryobi 18 Volt power set with 8 tools. 10" Delta contracter table saw. Grizzly 1hp drum sander. Delta 1x30 belt sander. cheapy 1x42 belt sander. Grizzly 6x48 belt/10" disc sander. House of Fools 4" cyclone dust system. Dewalt palm sander. Makita 4x21 beltsander. Grizzly floor drill press. Cheapy bench drill press. and a replacement Dewalt scroll saw. So yeah after a bunch of sale efforts I have said "we need more bleach in the gene pool" but if you keep going you can suckseed. Next tool should be a dictionary, but like another regular here says " you get my drift" Alan. |
