Default Need help with grinder

Hello scrollers
I bought a grinder for the shop, it has this grove on one of the tool rests.
What is this grove for and how do I use it? No instructions included about it in the paper work that came with the grinder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies skeeter and Pete. I think you nailed it on the head skeeter. I tried a drill bit and it works great. You would think with that feature they would at least let someone know in the manual. Well I wasn't thinking of sharpening my drills, but now with that feature on the grinder ...........why not. Thanks

I asked hubby and he said it probably is for drill bits or to sharpen a chisel. Or the plate is upside down. Look underneath.

I have never seen a grinder with a groove in it. If it is a delibearte feature I am surprised they didn't explain it.

Default What a great thing for Delta grinder !!!!!!!!!!

This is a new one for me too Wood-dog let us know how it works out. This is so unreal that they didn"t even put a owners manual in with the grinder, must of been packed on a Friday or Monday. This would be great if it works on bits, you could save on shapening fees!!! Marshall

The grinder I purchased at Lowe's is a Delta GR275. I'm posting a full picture of it.
Marshall....I did get a manual with it, but nothing is mentioned about the slot.
Rolf....I also find it odd that the feature is not explained in the manual or box it came in.
Skeeter's and Diane husband guess about it being for sharpening drill bits works out just perfectly, so that is what I'm going to use that feature for. It did not work out for sharpening chissels. The plate with grove is not attached upsidedown either, because it has to be mounted this way so the little grooved wheel under the plate engages the housing.
Maybe it is like Cracker Jacks with a prize in the box???????

yes it is for drill bits. Here is what I found on internet.

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
This new 6-inch thin line grinder from Delta incorporates three different wheels, one for sharpening tools and chisels, one for general purpose grinding, and a buffing wheel. The electronic variable speed of 2,000 to 3,450 rpm allows for slower speeds when using the white sharpening stone for less heat build-up, fewer sparks and a more controlled edge. When rough grinding is needed, the standard grinding wheel can be used at the maximum speed for fast removal. The on-board diamond dresser can used to extend the white sharpening wheel by "truing" up the edge to ensure a constant flat surface. Both tool rests are cast-iron and can articulate or be removed for larger grinding applications. The white sharpening stone tool rest has a drill bit rest milled into the surface to ensure the correct angle is kept on the tip at all times while sharpening. All three wheels are driven by a powerful 2.0 amp induction motor that is mounted on a large cast-iron base for stability incorporates the safety switch and variable speed dial both up front for easy access. A 40-watt work lamp with an independent switch has a flexible neck, which can be positioned to light either grinding wheel while maintaining a safe distance from the grinding surface. The full-sized clear safety shields have thumb screws for easy adjustment round this product out for all your grinding needs.

Product Description
6", Variable Speed 2,000-3,450 RPM Bench Grinder, For General Purpose Grinding & Speed Control To Polish Or Sharpen Without Heat Build Up Reducing The Chance Of Losing Temper, Cast Iron Base, Patented Quick Change Wheel Replacement Uses No Wrenches, Flexible Goose Neck Lamp Bulb Not Included, 2.5A Induction Motor, 3/4" Face, 1/2" Arbor, Includes Eye Shields, Adjustable Tool Rests, Drill Bit Cut Out, Spark Deflectors, Grinding & Friable Sharpening Wheel, Diamond Wheel Dresser & Manual.
