Default St Charles Pens

I got a few of these St Charles kits in with a order of parts and supplies today just to try them out.

Stag-horn Sumac with 24K gold hardware and Fiddle Back Maple with gun metal hardware.
Those are the only two choices of platings that kit is available in so far.

Nice easy kit to work with.

Hi Bill
always look foreward to your posts, because I know what you made is nice. I will get into turning pens someday. How about coming to Mi. for a week to teach me. Keep up the wonderful work.

I would love to . It would take less than an hour to teach you how to make a pen. Problem is , it's about a three day drive from here.

Pens are one of the easiest things to make on a lathe . That is probably why most turners start with pens before going on to other types of turnings.
PSI has a free DVD on pen turning.

Sales Tools & Instructions at Penn State Industries

That is how I got started with turning . I watched that DVD on my TV a couple times and went right out into my shop and turned my first pen. That was well over two hundred pens ago .

Fretdust you can always go to YouTube and type in pen turning for many videos. Great learning tool till you get your lathe.

Sweeeet looking pens again Mr. Young.

Bill as always, your pins are amazing, just wondering. you must be pin parts in det. you make so many. do you get the parts somewhere at a discount? also . do you sell these so fast, that it helps you keep going. or do you just love doing them. I know for me. fret work doesn't have to sell to keep me doing it. it is just a love of mine. they are beautifull for sure. you are a master at this. your friend Evie

No I never get in debt with pen parts I only order what I need for what is selling . Yes , they do sell fast enough to keep me supplied in parts and acessories and supplies.
I have made way over 200 pens and I am down to about 25 again . I like to keep about 50 different ones on hand for varietey because one that suites one person will not suit another.
Those pen kits are very low priced compared to the price I get for my pens and most of them are made from free wood although I do occasinally buy some acrylic blanks just for variety and they only cost a buck or two each.
There is good money in pens and I must get back to making more as soon as I get finished roughing out a bunch of big bowls that I am working on now.
It's free green wood and I need to get them done before it drys and starts cracking.
Problem is , it is so darned hot in the shop this week so I only spend an hour or two at a time out there now until this heat wave passes over.

Diane.

You're welcome .

Don't know if they still do it but way back when I got mine it came with a credit against some pen parts .

Nice pens, Bill. The Sumac and gold is nice, but I like the Fiddle back and gun metal best. One of these days I'll get my own lathe and try my hand at pen making. Your pine cone turnings are beautiful, too.
