The band on a cockatiel usually means that she was breed from registered stock and you should be able to find out who owns her from the info on it. Wish I knew more but my wife is the bird expert here. He looks like our old bird Obie 1. They are very friendly and social birds.

Thanks again every one, seams like He doesn't trust me enought yet to look at the band on his foot. don't wont to tramatize him to force him in a death hold. so I will wait a few more days, he seams to be settaling down now. he did something weird today. he did a pretty song, and then spread his wings out , did this many times. I wonder, is that a matting call?? mmmm or maybe a humbale thing, could someone tell me what this means. I will take more pictures, see if I can get a better one, for a sementaion, or intasia. I think you right. he would make a pretty one. then Jannett could take over from there. thanks again. your friend Evie

If you really want to see him spread his wings and enjoy the revelry of life, get a spray bottle and fill it with room temp water. Spray him through the cage bars and he'll likely go insane with joy, hang upside down, spread his wings and flap. Well ... he may not like it as much if he's never experienced it before but it's really good for them and keeps down a bit of the dust they create on their bodies. Yes, even birds need a shower now and again. As for the reading the leg band, you'll likely have to throw a towel over him, cradle him in the towel upside down in your hand and have someone help you find the leg to read the band. Of the 100's of birds I've owned and rescued, NONE of them liked their feet and legs being messed with. Clipping wings and toe nails can be really tramatic for them. Reading leg bands, you may even want to just let the vet do that for you if you take him in for a check up. Find a GOOD avian specialist, they'll be comfortable with the whole process and may even know the breeders band markings.

Evie,

I used to raise birds commercially in Florida, including everything from cockatiels to roselleas to conures and macaws. I have hand fed 100's of birds and can tell you that if the bird is at all hand tame, it was probably hand fed. Just keep offering your finger to the bird and it will probably get used to you and again become hand trained.
The band on the bird will probably not tell you anything, it is probably just a number band with the year the bird was born and an identification number. They are mostly used by breeders to identify breeding birds. I also doubt (although not impossable) if the bird has a chip, those are usually used on parrots and macaws, the more expensive birds.

Andy is right about the spray bottle and warm water...they will contort themselves trying to get water all over them...it's very comical at times.

Enjoy your new friend if you don't find the owner...

My Cockatiel died recently, it was very sad and we have no idea what happened to him. On the brighter side, we would give Popeye a spray bottle shower at least once a week, he sure loved it every time.

Having it checked over by a vet is probably a good idea, not only can they tell you the general health of the bird, but may be able to give you some good reference material to teach you more about the birds needs and habits, and signs to look out for. Funny thing with the spraybottle thing, our macaw hates the spraybottle for some reason,so that has become our tool to use when he bangs his cage so loudly looking for tablescraps while we are eating dinner!

thanks to andy, and mike, I will try the srpay thing. as of today. or should I say for the last 3 days. I have put my hand in, to ask for him to stip up. and now he does. with some arguing. but does. then bites. but not hard. he seams to like it. setting on my hand. I push him to get back on the perch. then ask for him to get back on my hand. He does after some couching. but does. then I bump him up and down. and he is fine with it. the pretty song he sings goes on. spreading his wings, he seams to be asking for something. I also learned today they need lots of sunlight. off the southern side. dang I don't have a souther window. so I have him in my sewing room on the east side. gave fruit. bannas. and peach. but not interested. I got hem where my computer is. and talk to him alot. Mike, and andy. I have him in a small cadge right now. and we a remaking a lardg cadg. should I keep him in a small cadge to try to teech him ??? or will he feel safer in a bigger cadge??sorry scrollers, but this is the only place I can ask quistions. to those who know. thanks for bearing with me. your freind Evei

Hi Evie .
Congratulations on your new found friend . He could very well belong to someone else but I know you are getting very attached to him so if the leg band shows nothing as far as a previous owner then he is probably a keeper for you.
I can just imagine how dissapointed you will be if he has to be turned back to someone that actually owns him.

I'm rooting for you that he will turn out to be a keeper and you get many years of enjoyment from him .

W.Y.
