|  A Pine Cone Pair Got a request from a customer asking if I could make him a bottle stopper and a pen out of the same cone. I tried it today and got them done . The cones do not always lend themeselves to various shapes of bottle stoppers because there is not much thickness between the pretty pattern part and the plainer core part of the cone. These were made from one cone out of the 21 lot of cones I got for 50 cents each. W.Y.

| Looks great, very unique. Maybe you can post an "in progress" shots next time you use pine-cones, the whole process buffles me.

| William . Yet again they look MARVEllOUS. Looks like flames on the pen . I have spent the last couple of Rainy days , trying to get my old Gil-Bilt lathe on the go . I discovered that I gave away the motor along with a bunch of belts .I cleaned out an old shed which I had to re roof . 40 years of treasures I gave away . I put a sign on the driveway " Free Stuff ". It requires a 1725 rpm 1/3 or 1/4 hp motor .It has 3 speeds 690 ,1300, and 2350 rpm . I think the top speed may not be high enough for much . A 31" bed and 12" swing . I put the band saw motor on which is also a Gil-bilt tool. It was from an old table saw . A bit too big . Got it running . Hmmm. House of Tools has a Maxum vs Mini Lathe (Pioneer),1/2 hp ,650-3800 rpm, belt driven on sale for $ 299.00 .I was told it would be better to go a few $ more and get into a larger gear driven model which would be more versitile . Mini Jets seem to be popular . Will try and wait till the Fall Wood Show for some deals unless something super comes along .Cheers . Roger |

I have had lathes both ways and the VS WILL rob you of power. I can change belts in a few seconds and have full power . Yes , the Mini lathes are very popular . The Jet 1014 and Jet 1220 are the most pouplar ones by far for hobbiests. . Jet also has bigger ones . I have the Jet 1220 . My money is on Jet when it comes to lathes. W.Y.

| William . Thanks for mentioning the point about gear driven lathes . I phoned The House of Tools and spoke to the manager . He clarified the fact that wood working lathes are belt driven and he was thinking about something else at the time . He also said one of the Jet models is not available in Canada only the US. He didn't clarify which one . Have a nice holiday weekend . Roger |
