Default First Pine Cone Stopper.

I was getting a little anxious to try a pine cone bottle stopper so I slipped out to the shop after supper and gave it a try.

If anyone thought that the core of those pines cones would be kind of soft like I did, . . . think again. I think that one was harder than any of the hardest woods I have turned. Lots of tool sharpening every three or four minutes.

Comments welcome.

Smile Nice

Wow that is nice, but after all you are dealing with the heart of the wood, so it's suppse to be hard right

That is true but I have dealt with the heart wood of many species of trees over the years but I can't remember any one being harder than that pine cone core. Don't know if it is isolated to just this one or not because a pine cone pen I turned recently was not that hard but it was a smaller cone.
For some strange reason I expected it to be softer than that.

Remember something.... these pine cones survive fires that destroy the tree one would think that the core would be a bit dense... I wonder what the rating is. Awsome job on the stopper btw. I have been wanting to get a lathe but the only place for it is my garage and I am not about to put my truck outside yet hehe

That came out really beautiful.

Never would have thought that something like that could be made out of an old pinecone...very cool.

Impressive indeed!! Thanks for the pic William. I have a new found fondness for all the pine cones I have to rake up in the yard every year. LOLOL I always tought they were a nuisance, but obviously they have beauty hidden in the core. Kind of like a lot of people I know!! ROTF

WOW, that is really beautiful. It's hard to believe that came out of a pine cone.
Thanks for sharing

William,

Another great piece for you...I guess I need to get back to my lathe...Did you start with a gouge?

Reminds me of jelly fish I saw when scuba diving . Droopy cone flowers look similar. Maybe that's the wrong flower ? Super job .
