Default 10 Out Of 10 Is A Good Average

Remember these in early July when a neighbor gave me a wild black cherry tree that the wind had blown over and I rough turned these from green wood ? ?

And then on July 7 they were put in D A for 24 hours and then wrapped and set aside to dry . ? ?

Well here they are today. They were all dry and ready for turning in two weeks but I was busy doing other things as well as a house full of guests. . . 10 out of 10 is pretty good going . Some other methods of drying that can take up to six months or more can yield only about 75% that don't crack.
I must say that this wood warped more than most other woods I have used but being of the wild cherry family of trees I rather expected that.
So finally got around to doing the final turning The back left one is the only plain edge bowl and the rest are Natural Edge but they are all out of the same tree.

.

Here is the bottom of them . I only turned a basic plain foot on each one. Nothing fancy at all but practical enough . A couple of them had some spalting in the bottom only on the outside and it is well sealed with CA to strengthen the fibers.
My vacuum chuck made quick work of turning the bottoms.

At this stage I have only applied BLO to enhance the grain and seal the wood.
After 24 hours of curing I will spray them with WB lacquer and maybe post a finished picture.

They look real nice. My right arm jerks around a bit and so lathe work is not on my radar. I love this site for all the wonderfull projects we get to see.

William . I was looking at the detail of the bowls and trying to figure the colour difference. The bottom looks as if they are growth rings ,then a large white area appears . What part of the tree is the white area? Does it have anything to do with wet and dry seasons ? I'm always impressed with all the material you display . My wife was wondering if there are lathe courses for woman in the lower Vancouver Island area ?

The white wood is the sapwood and the colored wood is the heartwood of the tree.

There should be some turning clubs in that area but there are none within a seven hour drive from where I live. Taking some actual courses is a good thing but I have never taken one. I just learned as I went along and asked questions on turning boards.
Maybe that's why I am still a rookie turner and learning something every day
Turning for me is the most enjoyable (and profitabe if you want it to be ) form of woodworking that I have done over the years. Just no end to the useful as well as ornamental things that can be made on a lathe.

Well Barry, I had a good teacher and I thank you for that . You taught me a lot about NE bowls on the other site and along with suggestions from a few others as well it was easy to put it all together .
Most things are quite easy to make on a lathe with a little guidence from ones that have been there . . done that . .

I have made over 40 NE bowls and I only have this batch and three from the last batch left to my name.
