Default Bike mishap

My new bike is pretty trashed now, I'm sure hoping that it can be fixed. Left for work this morning, made it about 3 miles and there was a deer off on the side. I saw him, slowed down to around 40. As I got real close he bolted, I slammed on the brakes and we collided a bit on an angle <low side fall>. I hit the ground and rolled off into the ditch. I was in full leather and full face helmet. I have a pretty good rash now on my left arm and left hip, but it's more leather rash than road rash. My ribs hurt under my right arm, and they hurt pretty darn much. I wanted my wife to just take me home so I could jump in my truck and go to work, but as I sat there, my ribs hurt more so I went to the hospital. Nothing broken, lungs are fine, just ribs are nice and bruised. The nurse gave me an extra strength vicadin. Then 5 minutes later another nurse came in and gave me an extra strength vicadin. That wasn't supposed to happen, but I didn't know that, so now I'm on two of them although I feel fine right now..wife says though that I'll be pretty flying high in about an hour.

This isn't really a horror story, just part of life. Been riding only about 6-7 weeks now and in my experience, the Deer are far more of a problem than other people in cars! I'm not a big guy, but I"m tough enough and if the bike can be fixed, I'll certainly get back on it.

Good to hear you are OK. I have seen deer significantly trash a car so you were very lucky.

You're a lucky man Jeff. Feel better soon and with two vicadin you won't be feeling any pain for a while. As my eldest son says, there are only two kinds of bike riders, those who have put a bike down and those who will.
A few weeks ago, a biker on the interstate out in western NJ, destroyed his bike and ended up in the hospital for several days when he hit a 100+ lb black bear at 65mph. It just charged across the road and with cars and trucks on his right and a guard rail on his left, he had no place to go but straight ahead.

That's tough, but I'm glad to hear you're pretty much okay. I hit a deer with a car once and that wasn't fun, I cant imagine hitting one on a bike. I agree with George's comment about two kinds of riders. I used to ride in my younger days and had to put one down, hopefully this will be your only time. Take care,
Chris

Glad it's nothing too serious and that you're ok.

We nearly hit one up your way Chris. A new baby just standing (and blending) in the middle of the road. Wish they came in florescent pink or something.

Glad to see you are able to type on the computer......wishing you fast healing, and glad your double dose of meds at the hospital was not serious.

You were lucky Jeff, I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt.

I hit a deer a few years back with a Suzuki Samurai jeep.

Don't know which had the eyes showing the most fear, the deer (and believe me, I did see fear in the deer's eyes as it got hit) or my passenger when the antlers came through the windshield up to about 6" from his face. I had hit it in mid leap on the hind quarter, so it flip in midair and came head first at us.

Fortunately I had seen it and was slowing down from the 50 Kph and I hit it at maybe 5 kph.

Did I mention this happened here in town, coming back from work in the evening?
We have a big park in town, and the police officer that responded to the accident (and had to shoot the poor thing with his revolver) told me we had a population of about a hundred.

Very scary in a vehicle, must be quite the adrenaline rush on a motorcycle, indeed.

Good luck to you,
Marcel

Eep! I'm glad to hear you're ok.

I hope you can get the bike going again, but ultimately the bike's just stuff. Much more important that you can be readily repaired!

Thankfully the only deer I've seen on the road here gave me enough notice I could stop, and then it bounded off the other way.
