Default It's Woopd Piling Time Again

My scrolling and wood turning sales have been so busy that I have not had a chance lately to go for anymore firewood like I was earlier in the season. Besides that it's too darned hot right now.
I found out I could get 100% larch firewood with real good measure cut to any length I want (I chose 18 inches) and split and delivered .
He dumped it off at 5.00 PM today . There is over two cords there and it represents 6 heaping loads that I would have to get in my little Ford Ranger to equal it .
It is so hot here lately and at 34 degrees C in the shade the only time to pile it will be early mornings or just an hour before sunset.

The picture is very deceiving as far as size goes . That pile it well over six feet high.
The wood piled behind it is some that I had previously gone and got myself by chainsawing it from logs from a burn pile and bringing it home and splitting it and then piling it. With this batch I only have to pile it.

Indian friend said it is going to be a long cold winter. When I asked him how he knows that he said . . . . White man have big wood pile.

Sweet!!!! Did you get any turning blanks out of that?

Today, I helped a friend haul about 6 cords of Box Elder knocked down by a tornado. 3 cords to his house, 3 to mine....still need to cut to length and spilt.. Headed out tomorrow for a couple more loads. Got to LOVE free wood.

Sorry about the typo in my heading. The edit feature does not allow editing of the topic line. Havn't seen any of the Woopd variety lately

No, I probably won't save any wood blanks from it. Not the best wood for turning although if I see something special while piling it I will set it aside.

WOW ! ! . . box elder. . . some guys get all the luck . . Are you referring to face cords as in 16" x 4' high x 8' long ? (after cut to length and split) or box cords that are three rows of those dimensions making 4' wide by 4' high x 8' long . Box cords are also called bush cords in some areas.
Six cords in one day is a LOT of firewood if it is box cords .
The pile I showed will be a little over two box cords when piled because he said he gave me extra good measure as a seniors discount and no taxes. ..

Now if that had been box elder like you got I would be saving hundreds of pieces for some great turnings .

Wanna trade a cord or two ? ? I'll even let you use my electric log splitter to split all yours the easy way.

Aside from just firewood...I have seen you post before about finding somebody giving away wood. How the heck do you get so lucky?? I have no cabinet shop, woodworkers, etc around me. Not even a wood supplier!

I'm with Charlie. I talked to a cabinet shop owner, all but pleaded for scraps. All I got was "I'll think about it"

Yes , I totally agree. I do get very lucky quite often with other kinds of wood around here. That wild black cherry I got recently was real nice wood. I rough turned some bowls from it on July 7 and it should be dry enough and ready to finish turning them anytime soon. I have been too busy to weigh them and see if they have stopped loosing weight. They are on the alcohol diet
I have had birch and horse chestnut and other kinds of wood donated to me just for the price of picking them either all cut up or cut up myself. Yes , I am very fortunate in that respect. Once a neighborhood learns you are turning and sees some of your work they will give you truckloads of wood just for one small item made with it. Some is firewood and some is nice turning pieces.

Mainly what I was referring to about being lucky was the box elder wood that Barry got. That is one of the nicest turning woods but there is none to be had where I live. (yet)

There's only one real cord in my vocabulary 4' x 4' x 8'

Mind you, this stuff is in 4 - 16' log hunks and still needs to be cut to length and spllt. It helps that the farmer is laoding the trailers with a bobcat. Unloading by hand is what takes the time!

Box Elder grows like a weed here. I haven't found anything special yet, but will definitely keep my eyes open as I saw thru it! Drive on down and take home a truck load.

Flip!!!

William - wish we lived closer, we have jsut paid £300 for three larch planks for our boat resoration project. We have been crafty with the cutting, though. Hopefully we will only require two of them, so can take the third one back in exchange for some teak. Heaven knows what that will cost us!

Default Todays first load....

Ended up with 4 loads like this over the past two days. Note those are 20' long trailers....my truck on the right..... Come on down Bill, take as much as you want.

There's probably 4 or 5 loads left to get before the snow flies..... Then there's 6 ash tree's to haul home at a different spot,, a couple more Box Elder and an elm at yet another place, and 5 oaks at yet another place.....
