Default Ten Bowls Getting Drunk

This is some of the wild black cherry from a tree a neighbor gave to me day before yesterday . I was in town all morning but seeing as we have family arriving from two different parts of Ontario and a son from Alberta in the next few days , I thought I better get out to the shop and get these roughed out because I might not get time before the wood started to dry out. I did nine natural edge and one regular edge and the rest of the tree I split and piled as firewood .

And here they are happily getting inebriated in a swimming pool full of alcohol . They will all have severe hangovers in another 24 hours and I will take them out to sober up . Hee Hee.

Great stuff. Are they round? It's hard to tell from the picture. And if so, will they stay round or will the drying warp them? They look awesome!!
I've always wanted to try turning, but I don'e have anywhere to put a lathe.

The only one that is round is the top left one because it is a conventional style of bowl . The rest are NE bowls and they always come out oval shaped . So you are right in thinking they don't look round because they aren't
Yes there will be a certain amount of warping by any drying method. . They are turned withing 10% of final in order to remove the warping when putting them back on the lathe .
Those will be dry and ready to final turn and apply a finish to them in a couple weeks so they will still be in time for this summers craft sales.

Good looking stuff W.Y.!!!

Cherry is a great turning wood.........you need to find some stump or crotch pieces for figure. Get him to pull the root ball......

William, am I getting this right? The wood was still kinda green when you turned them and by getting "drunk" they have less chance of splitting?

Yes Kevin.
The wood was very green as in a live tree that had blown over in a wind storm the day before. It is juicy green and sprays moisture well turning . It's a blast to turn green wood.
The alcohol soak is just one of the many ways of rapidly drying green wood without it cracking. In theory, the alcohol displaces the water in the wood and then the alcohol evaporates out of the wood within a period of a few weeks to safely dry it. . There are volumes of technical data written on it that requires a scientific mind to comprehend but I am satisfied with the basic theory as I understand it and have no desire to dwell on all the technical stuff. I would rather be turning because for me that is more fun than getting involved in technical data. .

When you take them out of the alcohol will you still need to seal them until you turn them?

Can you reuse the alcohol, or do the inlaws get it served in a fancy bottle.

Please ignore the last post. I went to google and did a search. All kinds of info is there.
"alcohol soak wood" is what I entered to search.
