Smile hummingbird

Hi . I just saw a humming bird in our bird bath . I watched it hovering beside it then get on the edge . I thought it was going to get a drink ? Next thing it was in the water , splashing around . I thought it was too wet to get out as it seemed to stand and fan it's wings . I was going to get my camera , but thought ,if it did manage to try to fly it might plumit to the ground . Instead I watched as it fanned it's wings and flew off into a fir tree. Interestin eh . Roger

I guess they need baths too. I have never seen one get in the water like that either. Hope you can have your camera ready for the next bath.

Rodger, looks like you got a gift today. they must trust you. I have lots of humming birds hear. and feed them. every year, there is more and more. and if you dont' feed them, they will buzz around swishing back and forth, telling you come feed me. and when I am watering my trees and gardon. they are all over the spraying on the hose. they can get very friendly, and demanding. I just love them. they also eat small bugs and make their nest out of spider webs. if you have a feeder for them, they will nest close to it. in a tree or bush, and now you will have a great time just watching them .I have also seen them take a bath on a wet leaf. your friend Evie

I have a few hummers around here and when I water the garden they dart in and out of the water shooting from my sprinkler. These seem to prefer showers rather than baths.

When I lived out in the country, I used to get 30 or 40 hummingbirds at a time on my feeder. (Tip, don't use the "red stuff" that comes with a feeder, the dyes slowly poison the birds.) Mix one part sugar to 3 parts water and keep a small shallow bird bath near the feeder. The hummingbirds will use the bird bath after they eat their fill.
The fun part is watching them argue over the feeder, they can get quite angry with each other, lol

We have a similar situation. No bath just a feeder. There seems to be an "A" Humming bird.........he chases every other one away to "protect" HIS territory. If only he would share the bounty he could probably eat twice as much as he does by being so protective. LOL
