Default Opportunity?

Today I stumbled across a new opportunity to sell my cuttings while walking in a local mall. I'm not sure how lucrative it may be but I thought I'd pass it on anyway. Others may find a similar opportunity.

Like many communities, we have a Art Association. Ours happens to run a small store in our mall and sells art made by local artisans. The association provides scholarships to area students as well as promoting the arts, etc. Artisans are expected to join ($35 annual dues), attend monthly meetings, serve on a committee and, optionally, volunteer to man the store. Dues and commissions support these activities.

Artisans are charged a commission the size of which depends upon how often you volunteer (15%-50%). Samples of the artists works are juried before being accepted into membership. I believe any decent cutting will pass easily.

The association also hosts a variety of events such as Starving Artists Sales, Meet the Artist (demo what you do!), an October Craft Fair and a Christmas Bazaar at the mall. They also are involved in a 2-week craftfair at a large facility called the Perry Agricenter where you can submit a work for competion as well as other works for sale.

I'm planning on meeting with a member this Saturday with my samples. I'll post the results later.

In summary, if your community has an art association, you might want to seek them out. You do the work, they do the selling. How cool is that!

Mike:

I do wish you the best of luck with the Mall thing. Maybe with the fact the store operator is a known and respected association may help.

Again, best of luck.

A very interesting idea Mike. It would help convince people that scrolling can be an art as well as a craft. Good luck with it.

Rolf has the right idea. You know how we like pics. 15% -50% commission. 50%?? Is that a typo.

This sounds like a great opportunity.

Chase, 35% - 50% is pretty normal with wholesale type deals. I tend to shy away from 50% contracts and have a wholesale price list which assumes 35% mark-up on the pieces.
