Sadly, Roger, some recordable CDs and DVDs can be very poor quality. These tend to have a limited life expectancy, sometimes counted in months rather than years. Don't ask me how the deterioration comes about - I'm sure someone will chime in with the answer - but I know this to be true from my own bitter experience. With recordable CDs and DVDs, you tend to get what you pay for and it's worth paying a little extra for quality brands; I've never had a problem with
Ritek, for example.
It sounds as if the person who sold you the CD used poor quality media. However, I wouldn't presume to suggest he deliberately set out to diddle you; he probably used the media in good faith.
It is possible to buy data recovery software, some of it being quite expensive. I've tried an awful lot of it in my time (you should see the number of television programmes I've recorded on DVD over the years

) but I've yet to come across anything better than
CD Recovery Toolbox Free which, as its name suggests, is freeware

. It does have a few minor bugs but if you're patient with it you should find it works on most occasions.

There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.
