| CPR Works This is a short post to encourage everyone to get training on CPR. On Apr 6 i went into total cardiac arrest. lucky for me my wife and daughter were right with me and both are trained in CPR, they instantly realized what was wrong and what was needed and went to work. My 11 year old grandson realized there was a major problem and ran to call 911. Due to the knowledge of my family i am here and doing fine. I survived a arrest that doctors tell me only 5% survive. I know for a fact that CPR works, if this post gets anyone to get the training with luck we can save another persons life.
I recieved a implanted defibralator and doctors tell me in another 6-8 weeks of healing i can do anything i want and should still be around causing trouble for years

| Glad to hear you were with the right people when you had your attack. One can't stress the importance of CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver (I'm sure I misspelled that) enough. It is so important to know these things, you just never know when you will need them or who you will need to use them on. And just as important, your whole family stayed calm during the attack but I'm sure they needed a double shot of whiskey when it was all over!! Now, stop and smell the flowers more, enjoy life more and get rid of the stress. Life is far too short!! We'll keep you in our prayers for continued good health & recovery.

| You are lucky!!! It is the attention given in the first few minutes that does the trick. I know, I am a first aid trainer and trainer/assessor. I also helped to set up a local "Community Response" team as I live in a rural area. At work we use oxygen therapy and a defib, as well as teaching paediatric first aid (I work for a holiday company). Some of my team have collected awards for their life-saving efforts. I cannot understand why basic first aid isn't taught to all children!

| G'day Grover,
Boy am I glad I can say that after your knock on the door.
I couldn't agree with you and Sue more about 1st aid training.
After being in the Army and the Police force, I've had more 1st aid courses than you could poke a stick at.
I'd give your wife and daughter a medal. Not panicking when something like that happens to someone they love is major self control.
Good on you and good on them. |

| Glad to hear you're OK Grover.
I'm with Sue - the more people who learn first aid the better. I was trained first aider for years in the school I taught at, mainly because I was involved in taking kids caving and hiking. Worst injury I ever had to deal with outdoors was a sprained ankle - a student who'd just abseiled about 50 feet and then stepped in a rabbit hole ...
Betty: Heimlich is the correct spelling - I'd disagree with the spelling of maneuver but that's because I don't spell in Murrican ...

| Re: Cpr good advice! My wife had a heart attack last Mother's day weekend. The doctor's, in their infinite stupidity decided to medicate her, not operate on her. (They had their chance, catheter in place, artery fully blocked, but decided not to) She stayed in hospital for almost a week and came home. On June 10, 2007, she dropped dead while getting dressed. If I had been awake when it happened, I might have done some good, I am CPR certified by the US Army.

| Glad you're still with us Groverd. As a retired teacher, I was required to know CPR and Heimlich. I think that it's time for me to renew my skills and get my wife to learn them also. The best part of your story, for me, is that your wife, daughter and grandson did not panic. That causes more problems than anything else. Congratulate them and stay healthy for a very long time to come.
