Default One-Eyed Scrolling

Are any of you scrollers out there scrolling with one eye?

The reason for this question is I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes. The right eye isn't working too well. The biggest problem is the vision in my eyes aren't the same. I find myself closing the "bad" eye, but that throws the depth of perception off. The good eye is corrected to 20/20 with glasses.

So you one-eyed scrollers, what are your techniques for overcoming this irritant? Help please.

Chase

I am not sure if it will help chase but you may find it easier to saw by placing a worklight on one side of the saw.
The shadow that is cast by the blade on the would will make it easier to see where you are cutting.

Depth of perception is impossible with only one point of reference.

I dont know if a magnifier would help. I don't use them, maybe someone else would know.

My dad lost an eye in an accident a few years back. He's been scrolling about 10 years or so....... He "adapted" by going back to the basics and "relearning".....in other words, slow down and practice, practice, practice. He uses a magnifier and his cuts look pretty decent. Probably took about a year to get back to his same level of quality as before the accident.

Gosh, Chase, I am saddend buy your post. so not haveing any advise, I thought what I would do is go into my shope and set down to my saw, and move my light around, and practice cutting. taping one eye so I can't see. on that side. I think moveing the light would make a big differants.putting the shadow like Carl said in differant places. I will start with in front of the blade on my good side. we will see what happends. I know you can do it. Johns Dad is blind, and does some awsome work. I hate that you are going through this, so I will try to help if I can. but I bet you will get there before me. for you are clever. and adjust to your surrondings. this doesn't seem like a blessing right now. but believe me, it is. in some way. loveing you little brother. your friend Evie

My eyes lack binocular vision, in other words, I don't see with both eyes at the same time. I can switch focus from left to right as I need to, so I guess I'm always scrolling with one eye in focus. I really don't know how to explain how to do this, I've been wearing glasses for about 40 years and my eyes have always done this. I know this doesn't help, but I had to comment on this one.

I have macular degeneration bad enough in one eye that it is classified as legally blind and can no longer be corrected with a prescription lens. . There is no known corrective surgery for it yet although they are in the experimental stage with hit and miss results recently.
The other eye can still be corrected with a prescription lens. I take multi vitamin/minerals/herbs which have been slowing the down the progression . That is about all that can be done with it at this stage.

Without mentioning a name, I know a scroller that is a member of this site that has a glass eye and does just fine with the good one.
We learn to cope with our handicaps.

Evie, you are a gem. Really mean it. Folks please picture what this girl is doing. Patching her eye with duct tape. Running into things in her shop, knocking over her coffee, switching lights around, scrolling at a handicap, etc., just to help out 'Ol Chase. A true scrolling buddy. Many thanks Evie.

Next is just humor. Evie, don’t let your husband read this if he doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Mr. Minnowevie seeing the patch (I am secretly thinking he has designs on Evie’s tools, new workshop, and small life insurance policy) said, “Evie, I’ve got a great Idea. Why don’t you tape up the other eye and we’ll go ATVing at the rim of the canyon.” Well Evie being smarter than the average blond, (and maybe more suspicious too) put a small pinhole in the patch. Well she didn’t fall into the canyon and made it home ok. After her shower, Mr. Minnoevie, the ever helpful spouse, was right there to help. I captured it in a line drawing.

Evie, please be careful and thanks so much for your help and concern.

Chase just take your time. I have only one eye also, reaching for things can hurt you. I found that by moving my head side to side helped me learn to cope with it. Life isnt over by no means, I am a 6 hdc golfer, you think scrolling is hard ? try learning to hit a small golf ball at 120 mph. good luck with you sight. Go In Peace

Hello Chase. I had cataract surgery in one eye which is now 20/20 for only distance vision and the other is corrected for distance veision by glasses. I too have the different focal points one for each eye. It is very strange when trying to scroll or even read. I tried a cheep pair of reading glasses ($9.00) and taped over the lense that that did focus then put lighting on both sides of my saw. It is hard for me to try and keep one eye closed and cut. YThe Dr. said that all I needed was to get reading glasses with two different lenses one for each eye and that would do it....$250.00 for glasses of $10.00 and some tape that leaves $240.00 for wood HUMMMMMMM........

Hope this helps. I was told bifolcals or reading glasses are my only fix. My surgery was last Dec. it took two month for the eye to settle down....
