Default Mirror . . . Mirror . . . On The Wall

In a previous message I think someone had mentioned a 3 or 4 pack of small mirrors from Wal-Mart very reasonably priced . On my last trip to Wal-Mart they didn't have any like that but they did have a 8" one for only $2.75 so I got it. I want to get some of those smaller ones if I can find them to make the smaller personal mirrors with a turned frame and turned handle on them.
I wanted to put a nice turned frame on this 8" mirror and hang it in my hallway so everyone could see the monkey in it when they walked by and make it about 10" finished diameter . However , I used a heavily spalted piece of buckeye and the wood dictated that it had to be only 9" total because of punky areas. .
After turning I was sanding the back and it actually broke in half. Better there than on the lathe and I felt fortunate that I had managed to get that far with it. . A couple minutes of CA and accelerator to the rescue and I saved it .

Hard to take a picture of a mirror. The raised edge on the mirror seems more pronounced than it actually is and the reflection in it is of the carpet material behind it.
Here is front and back. Not really sale-able but good enough for the purpose I intended it for in my own hallway .

The mirror looks very good to me. As another turner i do appreciate the work that you put into that project. i think that you did a good job on the save also because I cannot see it in the picture. I believe that I know where it came abart though. I think that it came apart on the pith line that is just right of center in the picture. I don't think that anyone except another turner would be able to tell where it came apart though.

good work

Yes, as a fellow turner , you are absoloutly right , that is exactly where it came apart

It was my first try with a mirror . Just one more of the gazillion (more or less ) things I am getting around to trying on my lathe from my Gotta-Do list . I really want to find a supplier for the smaller 3 to 4 inch mirrors at a reasonable price that I can turn a housing for and add a turned handle on them. I have heard in some sites that they are excellent sellers at craft sales.

William, have you ever thought of cutting your own mirrors? Just a thought, you could buy them large and cut them to size for your turned handles.

Sherri.
Cutting round mirrors is a scary thought for me . I don't even like to cut straight pieces of ordinary glass and circles would be out of the question for me. I would rather be turning than cutting glass. Much more fun .
Local glass people don't like cutting circles either and charge a LOT.
I have been getting answers on turning boards about where to get small mirrors in 4 or 5 packs for just a couple dollars . Gotta give those Chinese people credit for that I guess .
