Default 10" Glitter Rim Bowl

I rough turned this 10" bowl three weeks ago from juicy green wood. It was now dry and ready for finish turning.
Some woods do not have have much color or grain pattern going for them and would be "just a bowl" and hardly sale-able . Some burnt lines around the rim or some glitter added like in this one transforms a plain bowl into something that people will readily buy at a craft sale.

Sorry , the picture does not show the glitter as well as it should have.

Wife wants to keep this one. We'll see . . . there will be lots more from the same batch of free wood a neighbor gave me. .

These bowls are really nice W.Y. I like how the glitter makes a simple bowl look very elegant.

I really like the glitter effect, it turns a plain bowl into something classy!

I told her I will be making a bunch more like it. She asked if she could have a pick of the bunch ? and I said of course . So that settled that. She has quite a few favorites of bowls and lamps and tea lights and goblets etc that she won't let me sell and that's OK with me if she likes them that much. .

I use several different finishes . This particular one is just my mixture of mineral oil and beeswax to make it food safe right from the start without a curing process. It feels just like satin to the touch.

My photography on that one is the pits . The glitter is actually a combination of red , green , blue , yellow, silver and gold.

I just got in from roughing out two more Natural Edge bowls and put them in alcohol and took one out of the alcohol that I roughed out yesterday. Just about ten more to go from that particular batch of free wood . Gotta get 'em done while the wood is still green. They were spraying juice across the shop while I was hogging out long curly ribbon like shavings . Most fun a guy can have without laughing.
I am trying to get a bunch of them ahead for the summer weekly craft sales in town.

Bill, stupid question. When you say you put them in alcohol are you being literal? Do you have a big barrel filled with alcohol or what?

Mike.
It is denatured alcohol that is available at the hardware store . I buy it in one gallon lots. Depending on the size of the bowl, I use whatever the bowl will fit in from a ice cream size pails to any size bucket and cover it with the alcohol for 24 hours and then wrap it in a brown paper bag with a hole in the paper on the inside part . It changes the drying time from the normal six months or more to about two to three weeks without any cracking in over 95% of cases . A certain amount of warping exists in any green wood drying process and therefore it is rough turned to within 10% of its final thickness and then put back on the lathe when dry for the final truing up and finishing. e.g. a ten inch bowl will be rough turned down to (approx) a uniform one inch thickness from top to bottom of the walls of the bowl .
There have been many long drawn out discussions with volumes of technical hoopla about it.
I could care less about all the technical stuff. In a nutshell, the alcohol displaces the water in the wood and the alcohol evaporates out of the wood in the drying process. . That is all I need to know about it because it works better than any green wood drying process I have used and I think I have tried all of them.

Here is a close up view of the glitter in the rim.
