Default Maxi On A Mini

This is about close to maximum size for a bowl that can be turned on a Jet 1220 Mini lathe like I have . It is 11.25" diameter and 4" deep..
A slightly larger diameter one could be turned with dry wood but this one was fresh wood from a tree that had just been cut down and I got several truckloads of it for free.

I carefully band sawed the juicy green blank out of the wood pile to 12" round on Mar 2 / 08 and rough turned it to about 1" wall thickness. Put it in denatured alcohol for 24 hours and then in a brown paper bag with a hole on the inside part of the bowl for air. At that point it weighed 4 lb,12 oz. It gradually lost weight until Mar 19 /08 where it remained constant at 2 lb, 6 oz until this afternoon when I put it back on the lathe and finished turning it. It now has 1/2" wall thicknes after turning out the slight warping that occurs when drying green wood bowls.

The lines on that one are burned with a piece of wire . For that size burning I used a guitar G string . OK . no korny jokes about using the G string
Sometimes I use different diameter used guitar strings like low E or A or D depending on the thickness of line I want to burn. Takes about 5 seconds to burn each of those lines ..
It is a way of recycling guitar strings that have lost their ring and tonal qualities on a guitar but can be put to use for something else.
If you are not a guitar player like I am, any music store will give you some out of their waste basket.

Beautiful job!! Never thought of guitar strings. As seldom as I pick mine up (pun intended) maybe I'll just cut the strings off and use them for something constructive! LOL
