Default how much room for the table saw

Hi guys, I was just wondering how much room do you give for your Table saws. mine is about 3'x2' and motor is in front a foot. 4'x2 ' with the side rails. how much room do you have in your shops to cut wood. I am planing on having a table in front of the table. after cutting, for the wood to slide on. 6' but I only have room for a 4 'wide piece side to side. I could cut a 8' piece with my skill saw out side. if need be. what do you guy have. thanks Evie

I just bought a place out here in the desert and it has a 36x24 shop space. I have been spending a lot of my free time lately going back over the old WOOD magazines that have the articles about how to set up the shop. The only thing I know for sure is that it's going to a fair amount of space.

Currently, I have 6' to the left and 5 ' to the right of the blade and about 15' front to back clearance.

I have my table saw on wheels and keep it up against the wall. I pull it out from the wall as far as I need to cut the wood I am using. I have 10 feet clearance left and right, and 6 feet fore and aft. I cut into plywood with a circular saw when I use it. (Rarely)

You need lots of room. I just added 160 sq ft. to my workshop. I still don't really have the room for my table saw. attached is a rough lay out of the location of my saw. The big part (26') is taken up by work benches, tables, and storage. Still when i have to cut a 4'x8' sheet, I will rough cut with a circular saw then tweek them out on the table saw.

Hi Evie: I have a 13x16' shop and keep my table saw against the wall, it is on wheels and usually I pull it out into the middle when I want to cut something, have plenty of room to cut, but usually don't cut to many big pieces. I really don't cut big pieces, usually keep it to4'. Edward

Hey Evie, a lot of my tools are mobile that way they go out of the way when not in use and I have plenty of room when they are due to the limited amount of space in a two car garage. Of course I can't wait to get the snow blower out to the storage shed for the season either so I can stop tripping over it!

Table for an outfeed is the right way to go, and 6' is plenty for most tasks. That table will make life easier and a whole lot safer. If I find my picture I'll post mine below. The table is actually a 6' x 4' wide cabinet with a shelf in between. Wood is stacked in the shelves below. The height is the same height as the height of the table saw. It's fully open on both sides, there is a couple triangle shaped pieces of wood screwed into the side and top or bottom shelf to give the entire unit strenth, otherwise it would obviously fold up like a house of cards.

6' is plenty as I say for outfeed support, but the actual free space you need is dependent on what you are cutting. If you are cutting sheets of plywood, you need 8' of space behind the saw, but the 6' table will still hold the 8' sheet up for you if you follow what I'm saying. Me, I have mine up against the garage door. If I need to cut anything longer that 6' I just push the button and the door opens.

On the left side of the saw you need a good 8 feet of clearance as well for cutting plywood. On the right side you can usually escape with just the width of the saw, but not always! My recommendation for floor space to accommodate a normal table saw and cutting a sheet of plywood is 16' wide and 20' long. Don't forget, half of the length needed is to feed into the saw and then out the other side. If you have an 8' sheet, that's gotta be able to be picked up and set to the saw, then pushed through the blade then beyond the blade which is going to be in the 20' range!

You folks with shops sure makes me feel inadequate. I have half the garage so everything has to be on wheels and moved (and moved) before doing anything. Good news is that there is plenty of room for what ever I want to saw. The driveway is good sized. (snicker)

Thanks all. you sure made it easyer. my cargo cantainer is only 7'9" wide. so I thought I would put my Table saw to the right of the room. giving me 3' to the wall. witch would leave me 4' to the left. + some for the room to the fence. I could cut a 2' on the fence. witch would cut a 4' in half. also. I am making my cabnets. so I can run a 8' sheet of plywood. to the blade. with only 6' of table to catch the wood. but like I said. I can cut wood down. with my Skill saw. witch might be safer anyway. that will leave me with a work table. also. 6'x3'. pleanty of sanding and glueing space. thanks all. I always now I can depend on you. your friend Evie.
