Default Today's Box ..

For those of you who aren't sick of turned boxes yet ...

Maple once again about 5" high and 2 and a half inches diameter. Finished with EE cream and shellawax.

I kinda like this one - even though it wasn't originally meant to look like this - had to "rescue" the top after it flew off the lathe when I was sanding and put a big dent in it ..

That is some nice turning Ian. I like the design and how you accented it.
What is EE?
The finish is beautiful.

Thanks folks.

Evie: the dent isn't there any longer - I put the top back on the lathe and turned it out - originally I was intending to make the bottom section of the lid a little more domed before it went into a spire ..

Rolf: EE Cream is this stuff -http://www.ubeaut.com.au/eee.htm. It's a paste wax with Tripoli powder (rottenstone) in it. That and shellawax are sold at Lee Valley amomgst other places - I think I saw it in the Craft supplies USA catalogue but I'm not certain ..

Thanks, Dave. No the wood is dry - I'm not sure green wood would work for small boxes - the drying would cause the lids to jam I'd guess..

I got a bunch of maple from Lee Valley recently - they had acquired a whole load of "reject" baseball bat blanks - just shy of 3 inch diameter and three feet long - perfect for boxes. They were about $12 each but one will do about 5 or 6 boxes so the material cost isn't huge ..

The finials are left over scraps of pen blanks ..

I like this one Ian! Nice shape and appreciate the inside shot (to prove it is a box!)

Not trying to nitpick, but is that a little tearout inside the lid or just a "flat light" spot???

Ian.
I love the shape of that one . If it isn't for a gift to give to someone , you should get a good price for that one at a craft sale. .

Isn't that a fact and one of the nicest parts about turning. Sometimes we have a plan in mind what we want it to look like but without needing a pattern for turnings we sometimes wind up with something different and usually better than the original idea . Your little "oops" made this one into a masterpiece . Sometimes just a grain abnormality in the wood or small knots that appear inside that didn't show on the surface will take the end result to a whole new and different shape than the original plan.
It makes every one truly a one of a kind piece.
