| Scrollsawing group on Facebook Hey there,
I noticed that although there are millions of people on Facebook, there was no scrollsaw group, so, I fixed it, drop by and say hi, and post links to your websites, or pictures of your scrollsawed projects at: Scrollsaw Artists Group on Facebook
I also have a scrollsawing lens with some useful links at: http://www.squidoo.com/scrollsaw/
Cheers! |

| DDanchuk:
Thank-you for doing that.
Now, maybe you would be kind enough to explain something to me. This is just me, and please don't generalize my comments to other members of this board.
A few months ago someone else was looking into setting up group for scroll sawyers at Facebook, or something (some place?) like that. But I never heard anything about it again.
Prior to that, I heard about a Cat and Dog sub site from Facebook, I think it was Catbook, and Dogbook.
And before that, my Niece (with good intentions from her heart) was trying to set up a Facebook group for the wide extended family. And I did register at that time.
I have looked at Facebook, I have tried to understand, but the big question is WHY?
IMHO, Facebook is somewhere between Instant messaging, a MSN group (or a Yahoo Group), with a touch of a Usenet newsgroup added in. BUT WHY?? What makes it go? I just don't understand the draw.
Well sure, young people want to have their own Internet meeting place with out the "old-white-guys" (as another recent post had phrased it) looking over everyone's shoulder and harrumphing about the degeneration of language skills in the young people these days, and other nonsense like that. Some new place for the youngsters is invented, or re-invented, every 5 years or so; nothing unusual there.
I have directed my browser to Facebook maybe 5 or 6 times since I registered, but I am unable to fathom the attraction of Facebook. And yes it does seem to have grown out from of the "Under 30 only" banner (corral, ghetto ???) of attraction to young people. So could (would?) try to explain it to me why did it grow?
I can sometimes spend an hour composing a response post in this forum. I have spent as much as 30 minutes checking my grammar and spelling before posting on the Usenet group rec.woodworking, and let us not visit upon the inappropriate choice of words and phrases I made when I visited Saw Mill Creek dot org and decided to defend scroll sawyers against the laser users which I might add turned decidedly ugly in the posting against my defense.
As you, DDanchuk, are most likely an avid fan of Facebook, would an old-white-guy who likes to compose long winded (and maybe boring also) post really find a place at Facebook? Just may be, not.
But I hope the Facebook does grow, and many users in later years will thank you for your efforts.

| Facebook is a social phenom. It is a good way to seek out and catch up with old friends and schoolmates, although I have to admit none have contacted me yet....makes me wonder...
I have to admit I do not use many of the games, quizes and other features but I do think it is a good way to connect with people who have similar interests.
It is a great way to share photos with family and friends.
It can, for some people, be far to consuming, just like many of our hobbies.
I hope Dave's Scrollsawing Group draws more people together and it may even lead some here. Not a bad thing all around.

| I was invited to join facebook by an old friend and did so. Since then I have added other friends who have invited me (including 70+ year old) and have invited friends of mine. Then lo and behold two of my children invited me. Our kids all live longs distances from us and although we speak on the phone, I learn more of what they are really doing from Facebook and, every time they "chat" to pals, they drop me a line. I think it's fun. Don't get me wrong, it has its minus points. For a laugh check out Chumbawamba (a band from Leeds, UK), they have written and posted "Add Me", their humorous take on the subject.

| Whats the difference between FB and myspace? I've got a myspace page set up with a slideshow of my work and it was pretty easy to do. There is a scrollsawing group on there aswell with some nice work. Is FB the new myspace?

| Yup
FB is the new way for (at least it seems to be for the "Kids") to keep in touch, chat and lark about. It is very similar to My Space and even to You Tube, in some respects, but just seems to caught on with the youngsters. As well as having 4 kids in their 20's and early 30's, I work with comparative youngsters (I am the "oldy" at work). They are forever trying to keep me "cool", although I am often ribbed for getting it wrong, but I can cope. Check it out, it's free!!!!

| Thanks for the note Graybeard. I too was a bit skeptical of Facebook, I had recieved quite a few requests to join from friends that I passed up. I have a page on MySpace ( http://www.myspace.com/amazed_creations)which is fairly active and has done me well for promoting my artwork. I thought , Facebook is just for friends, and all my friends know me. Never the less, I signed up.
Two days later a friend from high school who I hadn't seen in about 20 years, saw my page, saw my artwork and commissioned me to do a piece for him. Not just a little commission either, $1500!!!! So, Facebook is good in my books, and a great way to promote your skills. I've since received another large commission from another old friend, and had a 3 page interview written about me (including the cover) in a local business magazine, again from an old contact who found me on Facebook.
I believe the thing that made Facebook so popular was that if one person signed up, they could easily invite everyone in their email lists. I'm pretty amazed at how many of my old classmates (I graduated in 1989 and haven't seen many since then), but I can see what they're up to now, and they can see what I'm up to. I also have an online shirt store featuring my artwork and many other non-art related designs (words/phrases/numbers/letters) and I can promote them on there as well. So it's a pretty good way of marketing new designs.
I hope that helps a bit, and if you're ever on Facebook again, drop by and say hi in the Scrollsaw Artists group that I set up.
Cheers! |
