Cool New Toy

Well I went out and bought a 10" Hitachi Band Saw today, sort of looks like a scroll saw on steriods. So, now what to do with it? If anyone here has some good ideas for using a band saw let me know. I have a few cuts that I need to accomplish on it for the doll house I am making but other than that I do not have an actual need for it. (yet)

Say BRSCROLLER. I think you should let me come over, and get it, I'll take it home and see if it can mill some wood. Ill let you know how good it does. just kidding. you wont know how you lived without it. I do lots of cutting on mine, and thats how I mill some of my wood down to 1/4 " and other sizes. just don't cut your finguers off. your friend Evie

G'day Brad,
Congrats on your new family member.
After a while you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

Like Evie said, WATCH those fingers, No machines forgive but bandsaws are the biggest unforgiving, never say sorry bas&&%ds there are

Yeah milling my own lumber was a definate thought, and I am sure that after its first use I will be on it all the time. Stevebuk, I am taking pictures of the progress. Right now I have all four ground floor sides cut and the windows are cut out. I am cutting the attic dormer windows right now, and I think I am going to rip some shingles today. (These are the cuts I needed the bandsaw for)

Congrats on the new toy. You can make wood boxes with it. Here is a link to a "how-to" site. There are also some good books written on this subject.

Congrats, I love my little bandsaw, I'm sure you'll find many uses for it.

Try making some bandsaw boxes. There's a great book out there with some patterns, or you can just go freestyle. They're easy to do, nice to look at, useful, and sell reasonably well. It's also a way to get rid of old scrap lumber sometimes.

The one thing about these boxes, though, that I wish more people would do is pay proper attention to the finishing. I sand mine from 80 through to 600, then apply 3 or 4 coats of shellac and at least 2 coats of a high quality furniture wax, buffing between coats. They come out smooth and silky, with a deep, beautiful look. Be sure to do the insides of the drawers too, if you don't plan to flock them.

Congratulations, our bandsaw is probably the most used piece of kit in the workshop. Having said that, all I do is to rip big sheets into the size I require. Anything more complicated my husband does for me. He started working life as a cabinet maker and has seen just how unforgiving a bandsaw can be (not his fingers, thankfully). Just ensure that you have lots of pushsticks and never take your eyes of the thing!

Good luck

Sue

If you do any intarsia's with thicker harder woods, I sometimes use the bandsaw for start/stop cuts. I'll make several plunge cuts around the piece so that I'm not scrolling to get to the piece that I"m going to scroll out.
