Yes, that is zebra wood which was in a big box of exotic woods that was mailed to me no charge by a very kind scroller/turner in USA and the pedestal is local grown silver birch from my firewood pile . That is one of the nicest things about turning. Free wood and very little time required to make a multitude of nice gift items.
The finish is a mixture of Watco oil and beeswax.

I am not sure if it would be classified as a knick-knack or not . I suppose that is in the eyes of the beholder. I always figured a knick-knack was something with little actual use which sits on a shelf but is nice to look at and enjoy whereas something like a a functional candy dish which is 2" deep by 6" diameter sitting on a coffee table in a living room full of candy would have a more useful classification.
A cereal bowl that holds cereal or a fruit Nappie that holds desert would not be classified as a knick -knack and therefore I don't know if a candy dish for holding candy would have that classification.
Perhaps someone who is more knowledgeable than me about such things will be able to give it it's proper classification.

Well, perhaps I said that because we don't have candy dishes around, and we don't eat the kind of candy that would go in one - hence, around here, I think that would tend to fall in the category of "objects that sit around collecting dust with little actual use". Which sounds like a knick-knack here, although I have indeed heard that people have such dishes sitting on living room coffee tables (seems I have seen it a few times as well). Great looking bowl however you classify it.

In our house it would come under the knick knack category, because it would sit around collecting dust.
Don't get upset Bill, It would be used, but a bowl full of lollies on a coffee table would not be full for very long around here.
Hence it would be empty most of the time collecting dust
