Default Woodworking TV

Since many of us scrollers do other forms of woodworking too I thought I would give you a heads up. Sorry Sharon and my other friends at Fox publishing if I mention another publishing company.

I learned today, from a NC woodworking message board, that Woodsmith magazine has produced a new woodworking series for public TV. Right now it is being aired only in Iowa but will be made available to other public TV networks starting in Nov. Not sure if that applies to Canada or overseas. You might want to check with your local public TV to see if they will be airing it.

For more details on woodworking TV go to http://www.woodsmithshop.com

PS. I have no connection to Woodsmith.

Evie:

From the rumors I have read on this, it will be on the same broadcast TV channels as Roy Underhill's Woodwright Shop, original episodes of This Old House from WGBH, and Norm Abram New Yankee Workshop. (aside: WGBH= Wow, God Blessed Harvard!)

You know, PBS, the Public Broadcasting TV channels, Sesame Street, the once in a while Opera singing, the TV stations with those week long money begging telethons every 3 months or so. Anyway, I don't know which PBS TV stations are on the satellite Direct TV you get in California.

The problem, like the American Woodworker with Scott Phillips, or that wood carving show back in the 90's is each PBS TV station chooses it's own broadcast programming. Each PBS affiliate, purchases the rights to broadcast a set of episodes for a program. Programs set the cost of broadcast rights themselves depending on the cost of production minus any corporate sponsorship. Begging the public pays for the broadcast rights the stations must pay.

Fact of life: Psycho babel, wine making, and talking heads discussing politics bring in more money than any arts and crafts programs including woodworking and home improvement.

This new Woodworking show will have to compete with TV programs as Sewing With Nancy, cooking shows (America's Test Kitchen), and HomeTime with Dean Johnson, plus many more. Maybe they hope to replace Roy "oh- Gosh, I-need-a-band-aid-again, I'm-bleeding" Underhill.

IMHO, the Woodsmith show may not reach more than 50% of the major markets the first year.

Gosh! wouldn't it be nice if I was wrong.

Phil

So true, Phil, but never mind. I thought I'd mention that there are quite a view decent video podcasts out on the internet for people who have fast connections. Apart from Steve Good's videos, there's the Wood Whisperer and WoodworkingOnline. I'm sure there are other good sites out there too, but those are my favorites. When you've got access to them, television suddenly becomes less important.

Check out www.thewoodworkingchannel.com for another internet based tv show. They play videos around the clock on all sorts of woodworking topics.

My favorite shows on PBS are the few Brittish comedies we get! But I don't catch them very often.
