Default Foot switch-What kind can I use?

Hello all,

I was wondering what kind of footswitch I can use with a scrollsaw. Are they a common tool, and/or can I use one from a sewing machine? or other? Are there any with a variable speed control? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

I have often thought the same thing, but have a few questions regarding keeping the speed constant. That being said, my very first "Scroll Saw" I made from a sewing machine. This was before I new that such animals could be purchased.

Now, why did I also get the feeling that it was like a sewing machine? LOL Maybe I can put a bigger needle on my scrollsaw and sew thick banner material? Hm!? Thanks John!

Hi Guys - I just joined the crowd here and will throw my 2 cents in. I have a foot switch that my wife got me a couple of years ago.

It is a pretty simple concept actually. It acts as if an on/off switch would, only you use your big toe.

Setting it up is painless. Just plug your saw into the pedal, then plug the second cord from the pedal to an outlet. Turn your saw to the on position, step on the pedal and away you go.

Hope the info helped! By the way, I got my "foot pedal" from Sloans Woodshop (not sure if that info is allowed)

There have been several discussions on this forum about foot switches.
Do not use a sewing machine foot switch to control your saw, the motor is not designed for it and you may burn it out. Foot switches are typicaly on/off only.

Thanks for the clarification Rolf, I thought of it after posting my original question. I'm glad I didn't take my old sewing machine apart! LOL

Once you use a foot switch you'll wonder how folks go without one.

There are many advantages to using one but in my mind the most important is that you can keep your hands and eyes on your work at all times...no more fumbling trying to find your on/off switch.

Sloans wooodworking has a great foot swith it works well. I have had mine for about 6 years and have had no issues with it. Sloans is a good source for scroll saw items.

I have been scrolling a little over 20 yrs. Just last month I bought my first foot switch, I don't know how I got along without one.

I'll have to echo Bob on this one. After all my scrolling time, I just recently got myself my first foot switch and I don't know how I managed without it. I especially like the instant stop when I take my foot off the switch. David
