Default Some turnings....

I went and visited a friend and fellow turner in Arkysaw this past weekend. We had a "turn-a-thon", enjoyed the company, food, and friendship. Thought I'd share a few pictures of the results. For scale, the biggest ash bowl is 13" wide and 8" tall.

Nice turnings.
The small one at the front in the second picture looks a lot like spalted buckeye but then spalted soft maple and a few other types look similar.
Nice thing about turning is the variety of wood which are in most cases free.

Thanks W.Y.!

That small bowl is spalted choke cherry. I brought the roughout from Alaska when I moved

And I hear you on the wood.....I came home with sycamore, walnut, maple, cherry, hackberry, gum, ash, silver poplar, and a couple more I can't remember. Here's a shot of one of the pieces of sycamore..... John Deere for scale!

Nice turning there, and that is quite a piece of wood there. Now see if you can turn the whole thing into a bowl. Perhaps that would be a little large for the lathe though, or did you have a nice great big lathe to stuff that in?

You guys made some nice stuff! Thanks for sharing the pics, I really enjoyed looking. Someday I might have to get a lathe.

OOOOHHH . . . nice piece of sycamore . I hope you dumped that big heavy piece very gently into that wee trailer

I have found turners to be such a friendly bunch of woodworkers . We are always trading wood that we get given to us for free because what we have, somebody else doesn't have primarily because of location of where the different spicies grow.

Do you have any particular plans for that large sycamore ? Very large bowls ? or dozens of smaller turnings from it ?

WHOAAA Thats a Big-ash bowl man!!!! Lots of fun huh? Hey, how thick are you making the sidewalls on those , some look pretty thick, unless they still need drying time. Dale

Thanks folks, they were a blast to make!

I have a coring rig, so that sycamore will be big bowls, little bowls, and hollow forms. I have another "piece" that was bigger...so big we had to cut it in half to load.

Lucky- wall thicknesses ranged from 1/8 to 3/4 on the finished peces...with the bigger bowls having thicker walls. A few of those pieces are "practice" roughouts with my McNaughton coring rig. If you look close, you'll notice a blowout or two as well as a newspaper wrapped walnut NE roughout.

I'll post a few "formal" pics later tonight.
