Default had my annual physical

had my yearly physical today and I came away in shock seems I have some major problems that need fixing, I have been under extreme pressure at work lately my hours were cut to part time 30 hours lost 560 bucks a month and you know what that can do to a person, anyways my blood pressure is way up, he found an irregular heart rhythm and I discussed my lack of sleep with with him and through several questions between him the wife and me he has set me up with a sleep clinic to have me checked for sever sleep apnea which is a sleep disorder were one stops breathing for several seconds at a time it can cause you to drop out of rem sleep causing a disturbance in your sleep pattern, some symptoms are snoring, chocking spells at night, gasping for breath, waking up with huge headaches, lose of concentration and forgetfulness, day sleeping it can also lead to heart problems and esophageal reflux (acid reflux ) which I am already being treated for so I am deffinitley looking at some serious life changing events

Hey Daryl,
My husband got diagnosed last year with severe sleep apnea. I used to worry about him lots at night because, like you, he would wake up choking or not breathe for extended periods of time. He did a 24 hr test and determined that he had sleep apnea and now wears a mask at nite to help him breathe. It has helped him tremendously. I now don't worry about him not breathing at nite because the machine helps and forces him to breathe. He used to fall asleep in the middle of conversations, and the joke was not to come over to our house after dinner cuz he would just fall asleep on you. He was also diagnosed 8 months ago with type 2 diabetes and forced to change his lifestyle as well as the whole family's. We now all eat healthier and excercise and go for walks daily. It is all a life changing experience but making us all open our eyes to reality. In a way it was good that this was found out for us because now we can change. We take it one step at a time and eventually he will not need the machine to help him breathe at nite. Just think positive and things will work out for you.

Hi Daryl, I hate to hear that you are having those health problems. Please take the time to get those problems under control. Your health is the most important thing. You are in our prayers. Steve

I have used a CPAP machine and mask for about five years. It literally changed my life. I never realized how tired I was.

Beware - there is an adjustment period. It took me longer than most, about 2 1/2 months. I hated the thing. I was getting less sleep than I had before. Now it is my best friend! If you are taking your mask off at night during the adjustment period, call your doctor. It may mean that the pressure needs to be turned up. Don't give up.

Some things to anticipate during your sleep study…
1. They will fit you with a mask before you fall asleep but you will not use it that night unless you qualify for emergency procedures.
2. There will be a camera and microphone focused on you all night.
3. There will be more wires then you can count hooked up to your head, arms, chest and legs.
4. If you meet emergency requirements ( certain number of breathing stoppages over a period of time) they will wake you up and put the mask on you and get the correct pressure set during the duration of the night.
5. Even though it is called sleep study - don't expect to feel rested in the morning.
6. Regardless of what happens during the night, you will not walk out with a mask to take home in the morning.
7. If your doctor determines later that you would benefit with CPAP, if you did not qualify for emergency procedures, you will have to go back for another study to determine the correct pressure setting.

There are surgical procedures that are painful and not always effective to help with sleep apnea. This is totally non-evasive and always works if it is used.

One word of advice, when you use it and have ideas of extracurricular activities with your spouse, do not try to initiate them while wearing the mask! It does not help.

I thought that too. Then I was diagnosed with S.A. They said I probably have had it for 10-15 years, it was just getting to the point where a drastic need had to happen. I've been on the machine for about 2 years and doing much better. There are days still, I have a feeling of apnea. Most likely do to a leak in the hose or mask area. (sleeping in a funny position which move the mask off.)

Dang little brother. I hate that you are going through all that. knowing that you will do what ever you need to do to resove all this.

I decided to edit my post. I was just reading the other day on some of that stuff. alot of those symtems was from the way the thyroid functions, and also a slower metabolisom, and for women, maybe men too, harmones. that might be a worhtwhile thing to look at. I know for me, bad diet, and stress is a keller. hope you get all better your friend Evie

finally had my sleep test last night folks and it did not go well at all, 2hrs into the test the tech had to stop it and put me on oxygen, I was that bad, he said there would be no problem showing the disturbed sleep periods there were over 50 in the 2hr period its no wonder my health is like it is, huge mood swings, appetite swings, depression ext... so now I wait and see what goes next
