Default Harry Potter chat - !! SPOILERS !!

It seems to me that enough of us Harry Potter fans have finished the entire series and may want to chat openly or brag about our predictions or whatever. However, one of my big Pet Peeves is SPOILERS. (I know, back when book 6 came out, I accidentally discovered how it ended before I had time to even buy the book! Major bummer.)

Therefore, let's chat, if you want, but for those who have not finished the series:

THIS THREAD WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS !

So turn back now if you need to.

I'll start with what I had predicted in the next post.

Default Snape & Harry

I'm actually quite proud of my main prediction: That Snape was on the side of the good-guys. There were many reasons I thought so, and from many points-of-view: plot, human personalities, the way books are written, etc. I was absolutely convinced of this, and by gum, I was dead-on. It did come as quite a surprise to me that Voldemort killed Snape. If anything, I thought it'd be closer to the other way 'round - that Snape would give crutial help to Harry in killing Voldemort. I also was pretty certain that there would be something sad or tragic or tender or something about Snape and his past. His unrequited love of Lily was what that was - I never saw that coming, although all the clues were certainly there.

As far as the great "Does Harry Die" question: It was hard for me to separate what I wanted to have happen vs. what I thought would happen. Guess I was 55% that he would live, 45% that he would die. So does that qualify as a completely accurate "prediction"?

Most of my other thoughts were of the "if-then" variety, so I guess they don't count as much.

So many things I loved about the ending: The big part Longbottom played, Mrs. Weasley battling Bellatrix, the entire "Nineteen years later" epilog.

I will definitely, sometime, re-read the entire series again. What a grand epic work.

Albus Severus Potter.
Truly wonderful.

Default Harry Potter ???

As much as I enjoy Harry Potter books and movies, may I inquire as to what he has to do with scroll sawing?

Not much, Pajaro. Ergo, the "Off Topic" topic. (I started this thread due to the interest in Gill's "Deathly Hallows" thread.

Tom Riddle lives!!!

Well, there's got to be some reason why I logged on here earlier and saw a link to a JK Rowling interview on Muggle.net which Carl had posted, but which has now mysteriously vanished.

I blame it on the Death Eaters. I suspect they've got to Carl in the same way that Xeno Lovegood was encouraged to adopt a more politically correct outlook on the Harry Potter situation .

It was a very, very entertaining book and I was gratified by how close I came to working out some of the conundrums. Some of you will appreciate that I'd cracked most of them, although I got the reason why Snape defected to the Order of the Phoenix completely wrong. The symbol of "The Deathly Hallows" is brilliant. I wonder how long it will be before it starts appearing on tee-shirts or even scroll saw projects? Especially with messages in the Harry P or Lumos fonts !

I know this conversation is completely off-topic but hey, we're in the "Off Topic" section. It's good to talk about stuff which isn't altogether scroll saw related - it shows we're not obsessives. What's more, we can fire up each other with our enthusiasm for different interests. Often, they'll manifest themselves in our scroll saw projects anyway. Perhaps the starkest example of this is how we learned that a number of forum members were also interested in ballroom dancing; this gave rise to quite a few scrolled projects with dance themes and I believe we've got more to come in the very near future.

I love talking about books and stories - they're often inspirational. But so are many other activities, from fishing to flying and from photography to philately. All of these topics have featured as scroll saw projects on this forum from time to time; I wonder how many would have come about if conversations hadn't wandered off topic.

It's been said that a healthy 'Off Topic" section is the sign of a healthy forum. I find much to commend in that statement.

Hmm-mmm,

How about a 12-1/2 inch long piece of beech, 1/2 round, with a segmentation insert of a dark semi-feathered looking insert of ebony dyed MDF. Shape to a point. Sand and apply full gloss finish and make it shine.

Mount this in a frame, and call it something like:
12 1/2 Beech with Thestral mane
(non-functional) by aspiring Apprentice to
Mr. Ollivander, master craftsman Diagon Alley

I mean, just how many copyrights would this infringe? 6? 8?

I like the way you think, Phil.

Of course, we probably couldn't sell anything we made that was blatantly Harry Potter without permission. But a lot of us are into gifts or just creating for our own enjoyment.

I was thinking either portraits or quotations (many of which will undoubtedly show up in my signature).

I, for, one, appreciate your cracking a lot of conundrums, Gill (probably with a crackundrumo spell, right? ) And great observations about the "healthy off topic forum," although I think in my case it only shows that I obsess over more than one thing.

Answer me this, answer me this...

As woodworkers, surely we've noticed that the films have one very important detail wrong. According to the books, Harry's wand is made from holly, a wood that we all know to be white.

So how come the movies show Harry's wand as being brown?

Default Does this make sense?

Gill,

It was simply stained Van Dyke Brown and then clear coated.

Mac..........

Substitute whatever word happens to rhyme with the English phonetic pronunciation of "rowlocks".
