Talking gas mileage

Just a bit of info to those interested. I tried this and it works. I have a 4-runner and when I fill it up with gas it has a register that tells me how many miles I can go on that fillup. In the last few weeks the gas stations around here have done something to speed up the flow of gas as it goes into your automobile. This causes gases to back up somehow and you don't get as much gas as you're being charged for. I don't know how that works but it does. My 4-runner usually registers 418 to 420 miles on a tank of gas. Since the gas has been sped up it only will register 380 to 390 miles. I started pumping the gas at the slowest speed and it's back up to 415 to 418 miles. Also, it's best to fill up in the morning because something about expansion in the fuel tanks. Another point to think about, don't buy gas when the tanker truck is there filling up the tanks. The tanker pumping the gas in the underground tanks is stirring up a lot of trash in the tanks and it can and will get into your car. I hope this may help someone out there. I know it did me.

I recently read that there is a class action lawsuit regarding the expansion of gas and what the customers are being charged. Apparently, you aren't the first to discover this, but thanks for doing the "experiment" for us to prove it's correct.

Filling any container quickly will cause the liquid to slosh back into the filler tube. When the pump shuts off wait a few seconds to let things settle down, then top it off slowly.
As far as expansion, the gas in the under ground storage tank is a constant temperature. When it hits the warm pump hose, fuel tank and filler tube, it will expand. As it flows through the lines, they will cool to the temperature of the fuel. The pump meter measures it correctly as it comes out of the tank. Filling up in the morning when everything is cool lessens the expansion.
You could fill up in the heat of the day, park your car and have less fuel the next morning without driving since the fuel will become denser (shrinks) as it cools.

I am not sure how things work in the US but in Canada the metering of pumps is done by a govenrment agency.
The fuel is measured at a fixed temperature when the meters are calibrated.
That way you are paying for the exact amount of fuel that is being dispensed.
