| Father's Day Present--A pen turning lathe I think I'm in trouble...
For father's day, my dad got me a pen-turning lathe, with a pen-mandrel and a thumbnail gouge...
I've heard horror stories about what happens to people when they get a lathe and start turning pens...
Are my scrolling days numbered? Should I finish all of the scrolling/carving projects I want to get done before I even set up the lathe?
Help!!!!

Bob | Excuse Me, is this a new twist on Father's Day, Your Dad buying you a gift! Shouldn't you be buying him a gift?
I hope I haven't had it backwards all these years.

| No, he got one from me as well!
My son died when he was three days old, but my wife and I make a special point to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day each year because we still are parents, even if our son is no longer with us physically.
I got my dad a few woodworking books that are no longer commonly available.

| Bob,
You are so screwed!!
I have made only one pen and It will probably be my last, BUT I am turning all sorts of other things, bowls chalices, vases etc. I start to sweat when I hear a chain saw.
In reality I think turning is a great enhancement to the woodworking hobby. I find I am doing a little of both and trying to incorporate the two into a joint project.

| That's what I was afraid of <GRIN>.
I got nearly unlimited access to oak, maple, cherry, and other domestic hardwood scraps (most 8/4 x 4-5" x 6") that scream to be made into something... all cut offs from a local chair and table maker...

| I've had a lathe for a couple of years now. I just have the GF come over and use the scrollsaw, then I have to go to the lathe.

| OK Bob, just use the lathe to turn things you can scroll
Or maybe turn some wheels for cars
I think the two tools go habd in hand anyway. In the past they were both one in the same machine.
But I understand your fear. I have still yet to take carving seriously.
