Default Corel Draw

Does anyone have Corel Draw. If so what do you think of it and is it worth the price. Thanks
Tom

I love it Tom but I've only begun to scratch the surface of its capabilities. There is a STEEP learning curve with it but I think it's the best program out there for scrolling patterns.
(Of course, you accused me of kicking puppies when I design patterns so take it for what its worth, hehehehehe).

Yes I have it. It is worth the money. AN older version may do all you need.

Another option is always Inkscape...it's an open source (free) version of adobe illustrator....another popular vector-graphics program. But like Corel, there can be a steep learning curve.

I was looking on the net at prices. The Corel sight wanted $200.00 for it and on other sights it was $89.00. Is it the same thing? Kevin, If I may ask, how much did you pay for it because I want the best puppy kicking version I can get. By the way, I cut the canoe one and it came out great. Thanks. I backed it with black felt and in the open sky part I put "JUST US".

One word....ebay! I use version 11 which you can get for about $50 off of ebay. Just make sure you get a full registerable version.
Rick has some excellent tutorials on his site for it as well.

As far as the canoe....where's the pics?????

Knothead:

Yes, I own a copy of Corel Draw Graphic Suite X3.

But $200.00 ?????

My first copy of Corel was about Double that, about $400.00. When I upgraded to version X3, I think with discount and mail-in rebate the cost was about $170.00, IIRC.

By the way, the "is it worth it?" question--- That depends.

If you are going to exchange the computer files with others, than Adobe products are more compatible with others in the graphic design industry. (this is because of the intense effort by Adobe to sell their products to schools, educational discounts, and help with producing training material.)

If you want to convert a digital photo to a scroll saw pattern, well there are other products that are more focused on doing that then the Corel Draw Graphic Suite. The Corel product Paint Shop Pro (PSP) comes to mind, but there are other products you should look at also.

As others have posted, vector graphic programs have a steep learning curve, much, much, more than the learning curve for a digital photo program like PSP has. So the question is how are you going to overcome the learning curve? A lot of self help / self-learning books are written for Adobe Illustrator, fewer for Corel Draw.

So, bottom line.... Do I feel it is worth it? well no, because I wanted something between a bit-map editor and a full blown CAD program. Ended up having to shell out for TurboCAD anyway. A graphic artist's design tool is not a CAD program, and a CAD program is not a tool for a graphic artist. IMHO, each tool uses different sides of the brain, if you catch my drift.

Steve Good has a Scrollsaw Workshop Blog with some good Corel tutorials.
He also has a link to Serif PhotoPlus software and his own ScrollSaw Pattern making software.

He has lots of other good hints and tutorials on his blog too.

Carl, I just had a quick look and bookmarked it to return later - the name software looks useful and that's an interesting idea inlaying Fimo that he has on there. Thanks for sharing that link.

Phil,
Have you looked at Google Sketchup? I still have some learning to do but I find it easier to use than full blown CAD programs (I have Autocad, Cadkey and Pro-E) and it appears to offer everything a woodworker needs and then some. Plus, the price is right (free).
I never pay full retail for software, even Corel X3 on ebay can be had for $100 or less (full retail version).
