Default Mac Computer

I have a PowerMac G5 and am presently using Elements 4.0 to try and convert photos to scroll saw patterns. I am having a lot of problems doing the conversions. It's possible (likely) that I don't have an artistic bone in my body, but I was wondering if anyone out there has a Mac and does any converting. Anybody have any ideas what application would do the job better than Elements 4.0?

I use Gimp and Inkscape. But both run through X11, the software that Mac bundles in the extras CD to make them Open Source compatible. If you have an Intel mac, it slows the computer down a bit, but it seems to work well on older Macs (I guess the support for X11 isn't there yet for the intel macs)
