When you open your Private Message box, at the very right hand side of each entry, there's a little white box, which you can tick or untick. (Is there such a word as "untick"?). Probably in America, certainly not in the Home of English, UK. Anyway, what is the purpose of this little white box? What does the tick mean?

In this case, tick would mean to check or select the box. Below your messages is a scroll down menu where it says "Selected Messages". Click on one of the options and press go. I don't see the word "tick " anywhere on my PM screen.

In the 'standard' parlance of Microsoft, the correct term for selecting or deselecting the little boxes is 'check' and 'uncheck'. IMHO, the language and dialect of Microsoft's documentation is largely influenced by USA's Left-Coast English. That has become the standard for so much technical jargon and documentation if for no other reason than the shear volume of books published. IIRC, I heard the term 'tick' being used to mean the same as the Microsoft term 'check' in a BBC TV production once. I think the show was "All Creatures Great and Small". The usage was something like "ticking off the items on the list." But I could have been a Miss Marple movie. The little boxes, by selecting one, or more, messages at once, from the drop down selection box below the messages, you can move the one(s) you have selected to another folder, or delete the message(s) you have selected. That feature with the boxes on the PM screen is a feature of the forum software and database engine from the maker of the forum software, Jelsoft Other forums that use this same software have the same feature with the small boxes. Thanks, Graybeard Phil, I should have known. I think the old memory cells are wearing down as fast as my scrollsaw blades... Bruce
