| juried shows I need some input about qualifications for juried shows. some say original work only. Does that mean only you can saw an finish the piece? Or does it mean the pattern has to be your work as well? Can you have someone else create a pattern from a picture for you, then you cut an finish? I have only done small county shows an such. Can't get what they are worth there. I understand there are some that get high dollar for there work at some juried shows. Everyones input is appreciated.

| Sandra,
You'd have to check with the organizers. It varies, there are a few shows around here where the application specifically states that no work is to be made from commercially available plans and one that goes as far as to exclude anything made from a photograph (nope, I can't get into that one either, hehehe). Give them a call and ask, it can't hurt to try.

| The few juried shows I've done only required photos of the raw material, me doing the actual work and the finished product. Things may change this Fall though.

| My experience with juried shows is that the work has to be your original work from conception to completion.
Take care

| Gees, Toni, good thing I don't apply to any of those shows! As I told someone this past week-end when he asked if I designed my own work "No, I can't design my way out of a paper box." And that's the truth! All the shows I apply just want you to make the item, either from your own design or a pattern. What I do Sandra, and it works pretty good for me. I take a picture of some wood, a pattern, then pictures in the process, like resawing the wood, sanding the wood, applying the pattern, cutting the pattern and a few pictures finishing the piece. This along with other pictures of finished pieces and a copy of one or two invoices for raw materials, really works. Just make sure your pictures include your messy work table, sawdust on the floor, etc., you know a "working shop" and you should be just fine. This method got me into a show on my first try that usually takes 3 or 4 tries to get into. I put the pictures in a little album that I get at Joanne Fabrics for 99 cents and mail it off. If I want it back, I include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with it. I do this with all my shows and haven't been turned down yet. Of course, there are some I wish I would have been turned down but that's another story!!
GOOD LUCK!!
Betty

| It greatly varies from show to show. Even high end ones differ. I have seen very few that require the actual design to be your own, but have come across it once. Mainly their criteria is that you made the entire piece from start to finish. Each show will usually spell out their rules on the application. |

| I have never done a show and doubt I ever will, but if I did, it would be a juried show. All I know is that your art or whatever has to be approved beforehand. There are different rules depending on who puts on the show. The ones I looked into just stated that everything had to be made by the exhibitor. In other words, it better not say, "made in China" on the back. I believe the purpose of this is to keep out the peddlers with their flea market crap and imported junk. They want only good quality goods so it attracts the right type of crowd.
This is my limited knowledge. Kevin, considering his experience, will be able to enlighten you much more. |

| Craft/Art shows vary so much - even those designated as "Juried".
A "juried" show means not only do you send in your application and money, you also send in a photo or slide of your "art/craft". A "jury" or group of people (who knows how many? one, two, ten?) look at the photos and decide who will get accepted to the show.
I have a show where I am required to send in a photo of myself creating the items I want to sell, as well as finished items.
I was accepted into a juried show which stated I was not to use patterns or plans at all, all work had to be original, etc. I spoke with one of the members prior to applying because the painting I do is from other's patterns, and she said as long as I did the painting it was fine. I think they were looking for new and different types of "art" for the show at the time.
Then there are the shows where you have to send in slides of your artwork - and even if the quality of your work is excellant, if the quality of your photo taking isn't, you won't get into the show.
If you have a show you are interested in, I suggest you first go to the show and look at what is being sold. Would your items fit in well with the show? Is it already over-represented? (there is a show very close to my home I won't go to because there are already too many booths with the same type of work I do). Then talk to the organizers and explain what you do and ask if it would be OK to apply for next years show.
Good luck!
